Jim Taranaki has been carving for 17 years and his work is as beautiful as it is unique. Inspired by his Maori roots, Jim's work embraces the richness of Maori symbolism combined with a distinctive modernism. Jim's teaching methodology is equally unique. He gives every student the freedom to design their own piece then guides you through the cutting, shaping & filing process until your piece is fi

nished. All the bone carving is done in Jim and his wife Charlotte's home studio which looks over the Hokianga Harbour. If you're staying at a hostel or backpackers, he will pick you up at around 9am & drop you back when you have finished (there is no time limit to how long it's going to take to do your bone carving). All you need to do is relax & enjoy the Taranaki hospitality as you're working on your very own special bone carving. (Lunch is provided) Over lunch listen to Maori Myths & Legends.
