dolphins🐬 leap out of the water for several purposes, including to breathe, communicate, travel, hunting and feeding, to avoid predators, and engage in playful behavior.
🐬🐬
Dolphins jump out of the water using their powerful tail muscles to propel themselves upwards, and then use their flippers to control their direction and landing. They also use their streamlined bodies and the momentum of their jump to launch themselves high into the air.

Misty Mornings - Some days start with mist and cruising through the islands is like stepping back in time, as though you are only people in the world and as the islands loom out of the mist, each island is to new to explore.

Island Discovery - Moturua
One of our favorite islands to stop on and explore!
It is the most forested of the islands, providing habitat for native and rare bird species such as North Island brown kiwi, Toutouwai (North Island Robins), Tieke (North Island Saddleback), Pōpokotea (Whitehead) and Miromiro (Tomtit).
If you pause a moment, look and listen. You may be lucky to catch a glimpse of these endemic birds.
The traceable history of Moturua Island dates back to the very earliest Polynesian settlement through to the early European explorers such as Cook and du Fresne.
It is a wonderful island to explore and one we stop at often, on our island and wildlife day cruise.

- Australasian Gannet - Takapu
Did you know - fledglings, without any previous flight practice, without having had to seek out their own food, and without any accompanying adults, the fat young birds fly 2,740 km across the Tasman Sea to the east coast of Australia in late summer and early autumn, where they stay for three to seven years.

Orca -maki
A crew favorite! we have small population of less than 200 orca that call New Zealand home, we see them on our cruises when orca visit the Bay of Islands in pods of 2 – 15 animals on average. Orca visit the bay around every 6-8 weeks.
In New Zealand orca are classified as Nationally Critical, which is why we always go slow and stay at least 50m away.
