“If you're quiet and patient… the birdlife hugs you, comes closer and we were lucky to see so many native species. Stunning. The iwi and DOC taking care of Kapiti Island are doing an amazing job.” - Sarita Petric, June 2024

Guess the plant. Is this one too easy? Let us know!

This small tree with dark green, heart-shaped leaves occurs along the coastline of our island, as well as low-lying areas throughout Aotearoa.

It’s a staple in rongoā (traditional medicine) because of its many healing qualities. If you don’t recognise it yet, you probably will once you hear the name, as more and more skincare and health products are coming out with this ingredient in them.

What is this plant?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you, James P, for sharing your Kapiti Island adventure!

“Most fantastic experience. Beautiful autumn weather complimented this stunningly beautiful island experience. The staff, from check-in, to boat crew, to island guides, were a testimony to what a friendly and beautiful people we are in New Zealand. If you do nothing else in Kapiti (which you should do plenty of other great experiences) do the island tour.”

How many kererū can you count?

Winter is a great time to spot our beautiful big endemic pigeons. From perching along the boulder bank track (which is only open in winter) to looking like they’re about to conduct a symphony, kererū are a highlight of any visit to Kapiti Island.

We love hearing from our manuhiri about their experiences on Kapiti Island. This whānau even made it to the summit.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “We had a fantastic trip - grandparents and children - so a great adventure for the 5 and 8 year olds.

“The boat trip was fun, the bird song was amazing and lots of sightings of rare birds.

“Five hours on the island was enough to walk to the summit.

“Great example of ecosystem restoration when the pests are removed. Everyone should experience that.

“Seemed quite expensive for a family at first but well worth it.

“100% recommended.”

❤️ We were so delighted with this email from Avon and Vicki recently that we had to share it with you. Brought a smile to our faces!

“We just want to say thank you to you guys for our trip on Saturday. We were so impressed, from your first emails to our first physical encounter.

“We were greeted in the check-in area and made to feel so welcome. Then the young man checking our bags was really great. Turns out he was our guide, too. He was amazing, but I’ll come to that.

“Boarding the boat, and the talk through that, was excellent. The boat trip was really cool, too. Then the guide. He was absolutely incredible. He gave us his presentation on the island, the history and what to look for. He had everyone in the palm of his hand. His relaxed style and body language as he explained everything was brilliant.

“We didn’t climb to the top, but explored the lower tracks. We soon learnt that if we stopped and waited for a while, the bush came alive. So enthralling to say the least.

“We feel that your team is world-class. We’re certainly walking adverts for you. Once again, thank you so much.”

We had the pleasure of hosting Piers Gilbertson on the motu. He’s the sound designer for the new permanent exhibition at Wellington’s Te Papa Museum: Te Taiao | Nature. We thought you’d enjoy the film he made about his experience.

He was on the hunt for something special - the New Zealand dawn chorus:

“The dawn chorus was famous for being a deafening wall of noise with hundreds of species singing together. It’s almost impossible to find that now in New Zealand as the decline of species has made it more and more rare.”

Here, off the beaten track, he found it.

“Although The Nest may act as a bit of a wake-up call, just like the dawn chorus, it’s also about hope and regeneration. Come and hear it for yourself.”

It’s so special visiting the exhibition, knowing that the sounds came from our island. Three million visitors have now been through. What a milestone!

Would make a great King’s Birthday weekend activity. For more information about Te Taiao | Nature, visit www.tepapa.nz/TeTaiaoNature.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you to all our manuhiri who take the time to share their experiences of our tours 🙏. Here’s a recent one from Extraordinary717293 on Tripadvisor.

“Incredible tour and hospitality, would highly recommend to anyone! The intro talk about the birds and history of the wildlife and conservation was really interesting, had a great time listening out for the birds as I made my way up to the summit, heard and saw so many.

“And then after arriving at the lodge had a really interesting talk on the Maori history of Kapiti Island and the family who own the land, so impressive how the family run this business.

“Then just sitting by the cabin/tents and watching the birds until dinner was amazing. The 3 course dinner with wine was fantastic as well as the breakfast and lunch the next day.

“All the staff were amazing, so welcoming and friendly and knowledgeable, just fantastic at their jobs. Unfortunately didn't see any kiwi on the guided night walk but was still fun and saw some penguins!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We love it when you share your positive experiences of our tours. Ngā mihi, Gavin (Tripadvisor, March 2024).

“Our group of 10 ranging in ages from 65 years to a one-year-old had an awesome day at Rangatira Bay. The staff from Kapiti Island Nature Tours were friendly, helpful and informative. We observed most of the birds highlighted in the introductory talk (lucky enough to observe the two takahe) and the views from the track were awesome. We highly recommend the trip and for those who do not feel able to do the challenging (steep) two-hour walk to the viewing tower on Tuteremoana Summit, there are plenty of worthwhile walks around the information shelter up from the beach.”
