Autumn on Kapiti Island is not golden leaves falling on the forest floor (Aotearoa’s native trees are evergreen). Instead, it’s our birds who bring the seasonal hues! 🍁

The chestnut-red kākā, golden-brown pīwakawaka (fantail), warm-feathered weka, earthy-toned toutouwai (North Island robin), and the deep, shadowy ruru (morepork) create a natural autumn palette.

Who needs colour-changing leaves when you have birds like these?

Manaaki shares that "Koekoeā (long-tailed cuckoo) adults will soon return to their warmer Pacific homes, leaving their young to be raised by their pōpokotea foster-folk until they're ready to follow their birth-birds back to the Pacific."

Did you know? The kererū is one of the only birds in New Zealand that is big enough to swallow large fruits and berries whole, such as those on kawakawa, karaka, miro, tawa and taraire.

They are also expert fliers, that is until they eat too much. Their love for fermented fruit sometimes makes them clumsy and slightly tipsy!

Did you know Kapiti Island is the summit of an ancient mountain range formed by earthquakes around 200 million years ago?

At one time, moa and kākāpō roamed the valleys that connected these mountains to the mainland. Millions of years ago, rising sea levels submerged most of the range, leaving behind what we see today - a 10km long and 2km wide motu with rugged hills to the west and lush forests to the east.

Did you know Kapiti Island is now one of New Zealand’s most important sites for bird recovery? 🦜 Since the 1980s, birds like hihi (stitchbird), kokako, takahe, pāteke (brown teal), and tīeke (saddleback) have all been transferred to the motu.

Make sure to look out for kereru, miromiro (North Island tomtit), kaka, pōpokotea (whitehead), tui, piwakawaka, koekoeā (long-tailed cuckoo) and tauhou (silvereye) in the bush or karoro (black-backed gulls) and tōrea pango (oystercatchers) by the coast!
