When is the last time you camped with the ocean at your door? 🤩🙌👀🌴 Looking at the ocean is good for our health! Science has shown that the colors, sounds, and smells associated with the ocean help put our minds into a soothed state. Literally changing our brain waves ⚛️💡🧲☯️ The ebb and flow of the tides alone destimulate brain waves and engage the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as rest and digest.

Autumn is when many avid kayakers LOVE paddling the Marlborough Sounds 😍 It’s a great opportunity for calm water and extra quiet moments. Relax and have fun, our sea kayak rentals include pre-trip trainings that leave you prepared!
It’s one of the best ways to explore the water wonderland that is the Marlborough Sounds. The expansive waterways mean that you can really get away from it all, but still enjoy the small luxuries such as water-taxi pick up if required – or you can call into a resort for a cup of coffee or a glass of Marlborough sauvignon blanc.
As New Zealand’s oldest sea kayaking company, our knowledge, expertise, equipment and service are unsurpassed. Get in touch with us to talk through the best options for your timeframe and skill level.

Fun fact Friday: Plankton is a crucial part of our local, and global, aquatic ecosystems. Microscopic plants (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton) feed many creatures and are a significant part of our oxygen cycle (an estimated more than 50%)! As part of the oceans’ biological pump, plankton take CO2 from the surface and deposit it in the deep ocean.
Phytoplankton use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy (during which they absorb CO2 and release oxygen), and for this reason they're found near the surface. They can be bioluminescent.
Zooplankton often eat phytoplankton, or each other, and then feed larger animals. Famous among this group are krill, who are a major part of humpback and southern right whale diets. Baleen whales such as these filter tons of plankton through their bristles. During daylight hours plankton tend to drift farther down to avoid predators and rise to the surface at night to feed. This (diel vertical migration) is considered the largest routine migration on earth.
Plankton can be found in fresh and salt water and are important to many systems, but they’re also highly sensitive to change. Research is being done to study how environmental effects impact them and ripple out to the rest of the food chain and atmosphere.
“It is confidence in our bodies, minds and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures, new directions to grow in, and new lessons to learn — which is what life is all about.”

An ode to a guided walk
🥾 ✍️
A group of friends, with Andy as their guide, Along the Queen
Charlotte track, set out side by side, With the sun shining bright and the sky so blue, They embark on a journey, both fun and true.
With laughter and tales, and food and drink, They stroll through the forests and along the brink, Of the stunning seas, that shimmer and shine, With the beauty of nature, that's simply divine. Their feet hit the ground, one step at a time, With the sound of their laughter ringing in rhyme, And they walk on and on, through rain and
through shine, With Andy leading the way, and a story to dine.
The scenery changes as they journey along, From valleys to hills, with a singing bird's song, And they pause for a moment to take in the view, With the lush forests and seas that are so serene and blue. And as they near the end of their journey's track, They reflect on the memories that they'll take back, Of the beauty they saw, the laughter they shared, And the tales they told, that in their hearts will be compared.
So here's to the friends and their trusty guide, Andy, Who walked the Queen Charlotte track with laughter and glee, And proved that the journey, no matter how far, Is always worth it, when friends and fun are what you are.
Thanks Stuff.co.nz for sharing that special Orca encounter that Dave and a few lucky paddlers enjoyed back in May 2021.
A trip out on the water often offers a glimpse of these majestic creatures. Can you identify the different types?

Picton has a new visitor! Following Kevin the Kotuku, we have a juvenile Antarctic Leopard Seal on our beach. Yet to be named, any suggestions?
A QCTLC (land pass) is required for anyone walking or riding the track between Punga Cove (Kenepuru head) and Anakiwa.
Passes are:
One day $12 per person
Multi-day $25 per person
They can be purchased at our office, but are usually included in our packages unless specified otherwise. 🚲 🥾 🌴 🎟 The land co-op brings together the Department of Conservation, Marlborough District Council, and private landowners, fees contribute to track sustainability, maintenance assistance, access and enhancements.
I’d rather be kayaking

Happy World Orca Day!!! We are pretty lucky to have orca visit the Marlborough Sounds. 🖤🤍🖤As always, paddle respectfully
~let orca (and any other whales and dolphins) approach you
~don’t circle around an individual/pod or cut off their direction of travel
~paddle at least 50 meters away
~report your sightings
~be aware when they are feeding and give them appropriate space
If you see orca while out on your adventures, you can call 0800-SEE-ORCA to help contribute to important research of orca in New Zealand and around the world. To read more about New Zealand orca check-out

🐬 Magical Hector’s Dolphins 🐬 This endemic and endangered species is a treat to witness, with unique round dorsal fins and a complex social structure. The Marlborough Sounds are home to one of the few distinct Hector’s Dolphin populations
Did you know we have pot-bellied seahorses in the sounds? They are one of the largest species of seahorse in the world and the only species found in NZ. Keep your eyes out in patches of seaweed or sponges, you’d be amazed how well they camouflage!

Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome🐬 These ferry views were extra special with an enthusiastic visit from the locals ⛰
A pretty spectacular orca encounter for some lucky paddlers with Dave this morning!
It was an oilskin morning at MSAC this morning with wet and wild weather. Hardy kayakers headed off for the day and Peanut decided she wanted Fred’s bed. He wasn’t impressed. Pleased to see the forecast is better for Easter 🐣
Fun fact! False crabs or half crabs have fewer legs than true crabs. They can shed their claws when threatened, like a lizard can shed its tail! You can find them underneath tidal rocks because that’s where they eat. They have comb-like appendages near their mouth that they use to brush through the water and scrape across their mouths to eat 🍽🦀
Guide Dave on his way to "work" this morning at 7am had an encounter with a couple of curious visitors..... make sure you turn sound up

We just LOVE winter visitors to the Sounds. Thank you so much to Bruce and Bic for sending us this fantastic video of your recent trip with us in the Queen Charlotte Sound. 'Just a note to thank you guys for a wonderful day out on the kayaks. Mark was a wonderful guide - very thoughtful, knowledgable and humorous -and went out of his way to make my partner- her first time out on a kayak - feel very comfortable and confident on the water.'
