From the 14th-21st of September is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in Aotearoa (New Zealand), a celebration of Māori language. This year marks the 52nd anniversary of the Māori Language Petition that gathered over 30,000 signatures to push for the recognition, revitalisation, and celebration of te roa Māori. As you explore New Zealand, keep your ears and eyes open for Māori names of everywhere you go, everything you see or hear, and the stories that unfold from them. Though this week celebrates Māori language and the monumental petition to bring it back to the forefront of New Zealand where it belongs, it is a daily celebration for us and for you on your trips as you’re guided through Aotearoa on a Wild Kiwi trip.
This week we’ll be taking you through some Māori language. Today we’ll begin with a few:
— “Kia Ora” which is a common greeting wishing good luck or good health.
— “Aotearoa” is the Māori name of New Zealand, the “Land of the Long White Cloud”
— “Te roa Māori” is the language of Māori.
Check back for more Māori language celebration this week!
