Organically grown Garlic Scapes - New Season
Harvested this week
$5.00/bunch - 200 grams
Use fresh, pickle or put in the freezer, your choice…
What is garlic scapes -
It is the flower stalk that grow from all hardneck garlic varietes.
The scapes are normally harvested to make sure the garlic plant use all its’ energy to form a bigger garlic bulb instead of a big flower.
The garlic scape tastes mild and sweet like chives but with a lovely garlic taste.
You can add the garlic scape to so many dishes to enhance flavor and make things more interesting. A few ideas might be, to use in your stir fry, make a pesto, pickle or why not add to your omelet.
If you’re interested, then make sure to get in quick while they are freshly harvested this week.

37000 seed garlic later...growing organically...our journey so far...
Last year we began our garlic journey. We have learned heaps about how to plant, w**d, harvest, cure and store garlic.
We sold only a small amount of the first crop hence our plans to expand.
Lately, it has been a bit wet so it took slightly longer than expected to plant all the seeds. We have planted NZ Early purple, Printanor and Kakanui. It's both soft neck and hard neck varieties.
Finally, all the seeds are in the ground so now we can focus on weekly fighting the w**ds without spray🌱
So far great teamwork family...👨👩👦👦

We sell 250g bags in our farm stall. Payment options Eftpos/cash/bank transfer.
This New Zealand early purple variety is a lovely hardneck garlic, great for cooking. It is planted in May and harvested around November/December and then cured for a few weeks before it is brought into storage. As opposed to the softneck variety, the hardnecks produce fewer but usually bigger cloves distributed around a hard main stem that goes through the bulb.
Here at Cherry Homestead we only use organic soil and fertilizer for our garlic and it is strictly spray-free, so it's not only good for you but for the environment as well.
These bulbs are graded as being on the smaller side and are therefore not suitable for use as seed but are excellent for use in the kitchen.
Approx 30 bulbs/kg

This weekend we decided to go on an adventure in our backyard, the Kahurangi National Park. Flora carpark is only a 20 minute drive from Cherry Homestead and that is where we set out on our walk up to the Mt Arthur summit. We had an awesome day with lunch on the summit while enjoying breathtaking views. Make sure to add this walk to your "to do list" if you haven't already...🙂

Our first garlic variety was ready for harvest yesterday. Now they are curing for a few weeks, maybe longer... lot's to learn but so much fun🧄

This year we have planted some different varieties of garlic, the hard neck variety produces scapes before the actual garlic bulb is ready. These are lovely to add to any stir fry, roasted veggies or why not in a pie... The flavor is not as intense as a garlic bulb.
Thanks to the kids the job was done in no time...🌱

Cherry Homestead was once an established to***co farm. The barn was used to dry the to***co in. The old drying rooms are still there but the outside Kiln, feeding the drying rooms with heat, was removed some time ago.
Motueka used to be New Zealand’s to***co growing center because of the exceptional soil fertility, ideal weather conditions and the suitable surrounding land for small farm settlement. In the early 1980´s the crop was no longer profitable after the government removed the requirement for New Zealand grown to***co in locally produced ci******es. Because of this decision lots of farms in the area changed their produce going into growing for instance apples and hops instead.
Cherry Homestead was earlier called Salisbury farm and was after the to***co farming days subdivided into many lots. A net cage was installed and several different fruit varieties where planted; like tart cherries, persimmons, blueberries, grapefruit, lemons and grapes. Other fruit trees where also planted around the property, like apples, pears, plums and peaches. Somewhere along the way the orchard became certified organic by Bio Gro New Zealand.
Our Family
We, The Wahlgren family, moved from Sweden to New Zealand in 2015 in search for a new lifestyle and the adventure of a lifetime.
For the first 5 years we were the proud owners and operators of a Lodge on the Coromandel peninsula. Their we had several different motel options as well as campsites. The lodge was also the base for our small fishing charter boat serving both Kiwis as well as international customers. Coromandel is truly an amazing part of New Zealand and will always be on our top 5 list of places to visit. Although now we might have found a place even more stunning…
A new chapter began in February 2020 when the whole family decided it was time to leave Coromandel and make our way south and finally settled in the breathtakingly beautiful Motueka Valley on the top of the South Island.
Emelie and Johan with their two kids Loke and Viggo along with grandma Lotta and grandpa Thomas have now settled down on our 17 acre property named Cherry Homestead. Beautifully nestled in between the mountains and the sparklingly clear Motueka River renowned for its exceptional trout fishing.
With an organic orchard as well as a separate farm stay cottage there is plenty to keep everybody busy. On top of that Emelie is also a keen designer and artist working mostly with driftwood to create adorable little craft pieces.
Up cycling of furniture, as well as new production, is another part of our design venture and that’s where Emelie’s husband Johan can put his background as carpenter to good use when needed.
