There are many fallacies and misconceptions around allowing for open-ended play for Montessori children. My belief is that Open-ended activities are great for sensorial and intellectual exploration, creativity and imagination and is a crucial component in the healthy growth of our tamariki.
I see open-ended play in my Montessori home class too,
It doesnβt mean itβs less of the Montessori teaching philosophy. Just as Simone from the Montessori Notebook has shared we can see situations where
βA child who has mastered a basket of language objects will happily pretend to cook with the objects of kitchen items
a child making cookies from playdough
the exploration of a wide range of art materials (from scribbling with chalk to water colour painting to cutting with scissors and creating a collage with the pieces)
playing with the farm animals
children exploring the materials in other ways than I expected β and as long as they are not harming themselves, another, or the materials.β
I will always allow for that explorationπ
Love thy work π
Many of our childhood beliefs -whether imposed upon us intentionally or not are carried well into adulthood.
And this is one of the many reasons we find ourselves well out of touch with our true selves as adults... find these that donβt serve you and let them go!
β Cβmon Donny, stop being fast all your life I really really want a cuddle! β - Billy π

Hi everyone π With some new recent page likes and members joining our community, allow me to introduce to you all my little whanau π»
My name is Rochelle...I began Farm Cottage Montessori Home based Childcare in 2017, I am contracted to an amazing service provider called Inspired. I initially only had a short term vision of caring for children in my own home after the birth of my son in 2016. My idea to provide home based education was born to temporarily help rebalance home/work life with a new baby while Michael worked away from home. I wasnβt intending on carrying this out as long as I have but hey Iβm fully committed now and havenβt looked back! Itβs been a fantastic move for me professionally as well as personally. I have been working with children and their families as a ECE teacher since I left school in 2004....!! I graduated with a Diploma in Teaching and Learning in 2007 and soon fell in love with the teachings and practices of Montessori Education. I studied again in 2009 completing my International Montessori teaching Diploma for 0-3 year olds.
Michael is my fiancΓ©/ baby daddy - he works away weekdays up in the big smoke, -aka Auckland -while me and the kids hold down the fort. We love Fridays when we get to have him home again! βοΈ
Our silver lining amongst this Covid-19 chaos has been this decent uninterrupted time to spend with one another, itβs been pretty incredible! π Here are our two gorgeous humans, Indy, who is 7 years old and our 3 year old Billy. ππ
I cannot wait to reopen our classroom and be reunited with my care children, Iβm reeeaaallly missing all my little lovelies!!!

Repetition is a vital aspect of the developing childβs brain π§ ... It provides the practice that children need to master new skills. It helps the child to increase their speed of learning new skills as well as their confidence. Not to mention making those most important neuron connections strong and solid βοΈ

Could not have folded this washing better myself! Thanks Kaelyn you are a beautiful shining star! This practical life activity sets you up for growth in independence and responsibility, strengthen muscular control of your fingers as well as indirectly preparing you for geometry by subconscious absorption of folding lines. Well done! β€οΈπ‘
