Have you got kiwi-spotting on your must-see list? 😍 Save this post for 6 locations where you could see these iconic birds in Auckland!

📍Auckland Zoo
Experience kiwi at Auckland Zoo. Their specially designed Te Pō / The Night habitat has these nocturnal birds roaming in the dark, to help you catch a glimpse of them during the day. Join their 12.30pm free keeper talk each day, so you can learn more about them.

⛰️ Tiritiri Matangi Island
The island is home to around 80 little spotted kiwi - the smallest of the five kiwi species! Want to spot one in the wild or hear its call? Stay overnight in available accommodation and wait for nightfall for your chance.

🌳 Tāwharanui Regional Park
Ever wandered through a predator-free sanctuary? Tāwharanui’s North Island brown kiwi await your nighttime adventure. Book a nearby lodge or pitch a tent in the park’s campground, stroll the Ecology Trail and keep your eyes peeled for these nocturnal locals.

⛰️ Rotoroa Island NZ
There are about 25 Coromandel brown kiwi living on Rotoroa Island. Rangers on the island can help you pick a track that’ll give you the best chance of spotting this precious taonga at night.

🌳 Shakespear Regional Park
Love exploring nature? Shakespear Regional Park offers far more than lush greenery and stunning views - it’s also home to around 20 little spotted kiwi! Stay at the stunning Te Haruhi Bay campground or a nearby lodge and go on a moonlit adventure to spot these special birds.

⛰️ Motuihe Island
Little spotted kiwi can be found living on this beautiful pest-free island sanctuary. Set up camp on a sandy, sheltered beach and wait for nightfall for your chance to see one in the wild.

Ready, set, glow ✨ Auckland’s city centre has lit up to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) and Mahuru Māori!

The city’s streets and squares have become a vibrant canvas for three symbolic te reo Māori kupu (words) to mark this important celebration, referencing the whakatauākī (saying):

“Ko te reo kia rere. Ko te reo kia tika. Ko te reo kia Māori.”

“Let the language flow. Let the language be correct. Let the language come from a te ao Māori worldview.”

Plus, an exciting calendar of events, activations and workshops designed to teach te reo Māori is on throughout the month!

Our Story

Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland.

Explore New Zealand’s largest city, where city style and spectacular landscapes go hand in hand.

Discover beautiful beaches, superb food and wine, world-class shopping, unique cultural experiences, and plenty of action and adventure – and all so close.

Shop up a storm or climb a volcano. Dine at waterfront restaurants or go dolphin spotting in the Hauraki Gulf. Dive into the nightlife or leap off the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. Escape to an idyllic island or discover our unique Māori culture. Sip on designer cocktails in the city centre or pack a picnic and head to the beach (we’ve got a lot to choose from).
