Autumn colours just started coming out in Arrowtown. Light frost came down on the hills last night but temperature picked up as soon as the sun hit slopes. While walking along Arrow River today, we enjoyed calm and warm weather! The best time to see autumn colours in Queenstown area is between mid April and early May. We usually enjoy Indian summer weather.

High above Queenstown, the Aotearoa‘a adventure capital, a pyramidal figure of Ben Lomond dominates the view. Take Skyline gondola to skip the steepest part of the track, gentle climb brings you to Ben Lomond Saddle before the final ascent to the summit. Approximately 5 to 6 hours return trip from central Queenstown. I even had a good afternoon nap in alpine meadows with the Remarkables and Lake Whakatipu!

I can’t believe the summer hiking season is almost over and Easter weekend is only two weeks away. When you walk in bush in the West Coast this time of year, you might smell beautiful fragrance of Raupeka, Earina autumnalis, commonly known as Easter Orchid. The flowers are insect pollinated and pollination is aided by the inside of the flowers being sticky!
