The busiest winter in the mountains for me has led to a longing anticipation to get back into the river valleys, the season is almost here and I'm as eager as ever for everything flyfishing has to offer. Not long now until we will be sighting fishing on the warm, longer days that the backcountry season brings.
I can not wait, See you soon!

Fantastic road trip away with our leader Tim and his disciples this summer, enjoying the back country roads that lead to the rivers in the lesser-known parts of the lower south island, with the intention of making memories and connecting to its surroundings and inhabitants along the way. Life is short, it's time to plan that trip with the people you enjoy spending this life with.
Now taking bookings for the 2024 season.

Great day out with Kyle and his father Chris from Montana on their first trip out to NZ hunting and fishing the south island of New Zealand. The weather made fishing tough on this day. The Elements were considered and our fishy targets were acquired.
Kyle stepped up and made the most of the limited opportunity we had. Which runs true to the nature of being a keen outdoorsman and a guide himself. Operating elusive_outfitters_ over in the Midwest he got the result with ease.
A pleasure to get him and his dad out on the maiden trip to the New Zealand wilderness.

Fantastic time away with Rob this season. A multi-day road trip offered up some great fishing with vistas changing with each new valley we strolled into, the scenery and the New Zealand hospitality were well and truly honoured with backcountry smorgasbords and afternoon R&Rs on the riverbanks to small-town delights and enjoying the local scenes. A well-rounded view of what the New Zealand experience is all about.
Enjoying the people and places in the spaces where we all connect.

Always a blast teaching the next generation a few things about life in the outdoors! Today, Poppy showed great talent on the fly-casting adventure and helped remind me a thing or two about what it's all about, wading deep until our boots nearly got filled from the inside out, jumping creeks and mud swimming as well as a lesson in speaking Moo cow. “Always handy apparently”. We also found lots a bugs and insects to keep us entertained under the rocks.
A good lesson to never stop exploring and having the curiosity of a kid who just drank a juice box along the way!

Like a good Yogi, Celeste was keeping a flex in the rod and keeping the fish cool whilst having stretch in skandasana pose. Connecting to fish like the constellations in the night sky she was sourcing the flow both above and below the surface flim.

Making memories through generations of family experiences deepens our connection to the great outdoors and appreciation of each other. Through the humble art of observing, learning and growing together as a whole. We can connect over joyous recreation and strengthen the last bonds that will live on beyond our own lifetimes. That's what family is about and fishing is an ageless pursuit that connects all through generations and can warm the hearts of all. Like a knowing smile of a grandparent smiling at their grandkid.
Here is Jack showing gratitude for his time and cherishing with his Sons.
That is what it's all about, make the connection.
Blue duck (Whio) are endemic to New Zealand. They live in pristine environments and are a treat
to see on the river.

If you plan to travel to New Zealand this summer to fish some of Aotearoa’s unparalleled rivers.
It would pay significant dividends to come prepared! The weather can certainly be an essential factor when targeting sighted trout in our gin-clear waterways. So practising your casting before landing on our shores goes a long way towards landing that dream trout.
I still often get out on the lawn or the nearest lake to brush up and enhance my understanding of fly casting in various weather conditions. It’s fun and sets the mind at ease when that opportunity presents itself in the backcountry.
Tight lines,

Target acquired in favourable conditions.
It still gets the heart rate going coming across a scenario like this one, taking a few minutes to form a solid approach is worth the wait. You may only get one chance to present your fly at a fish like this, make it count!

Fish are cool, but the people you meet in the NZ wild places are the memories the will last a lifetime. The hardy kiwi legends got me out of the s**t today and gave me a slice of kiwi hospitality. I am forever grateful. I'll aspire to do the same 🙌
To all you fair-weather fishermen, you're missing out.
Nothing like targeting pressured fish on the local to revaluate tactics and fly design
