Last night we popped in to checkout at the Marina in Queenstown. What a great new place - highly recommend it. Excellent food, great service and some fabulous wines. The outdoor heaters and blankets were an added bonus.

Otago District - Lakes zone enters restricted fire season

The Lakes zone in Otago will enter a restricted fire season, as of 8am on Saturday 9 December, until further notice.

A restricted fire season means a permit is required to light a fire in open air. You can apply for one at www.checkitsalright.nz.

Declaring the restricted fire season, Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Otago District Manager Phil Marsh says conditions in Otago are rapidly changing. “This coming weekend and into the start of next week we are looking at a potential ‘spike’ period where forest fire danger will likely reach ‘very extreme’ in Lakes, Central and Upper Waitaki,” he says. “For that reason, we have made the decision to move Lakes into a restricted fire season.” “Requiring people to have a permit before lighting a fire means our local team can be on hand to provide advice about how to safely conduct a burn.”

Great news everyone! Today we can confirm the boil water notice for all areas across the Queenstown water supply network can now be lifted.

This follows the successful installation of UV reactors at its Two Mile water treatment plant which are now fully operational and compliant with the order issued by national drinking water regulator, Taumata Arowai.

Update from the Queenstown Lakes Regional Council regarding the boil water notice currently in place

Flushing of the Two Mile water supply network begins today after successful trials. This is an essential part of our response to the cryptosporidium outbreak and, ultimately, lifting the boil water notice for remaining parts of Queenstown. Whilst this is a planned and controlled process, you may notice (QLDC contractor) Veolia teams out and about opening hydrants with water flowing into stormwater drains as a result.

We are working to minimise any disruption but there is a chance of temporary, brief water shutdowns to some properties over the next two weeks. Please continue to boil water if you live or work in the following areas:

• Queenstown town centre;
• Gorge Rd out to and including Industrial Place;
• Fernhill;
• Sunshine Bay; and
• Queenstown Hill above Frankton Rd out to and including Goldridge Way and Goldrush Way.
