Step inside the creative hub of New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute at Te Puia to witness the traditional methods of carving wood, bone and stone. The institute's mission is to protect, preserve and promote Māori culture, partly by teaching these centuries-old processes to New Zealand iwi.

Similar to Māori moko (tattoos), carvings are rich in symbolism and use common patterns, though styles differ between tribes.

2. Bring your book to snugrotorua just around the corner, to enjoy with a coffee.
3. Stroll along the lakefront boardwalk, just a couple blocks away.
4. Grab something gorgeous from Juniper Art + Home, also just a few blocks away.
5. Dine and shop at the locals’ fave Rotorua Night Market, every Thursday on Tutanekai Street.
6. Grab a movie at the cosy little The Wall and Basement Cinema Rotorua in the central city.
