Relive the magic of Matariki with us! In MΔori culture, Matariki refers to both the Pleiades star cluster and a celebration of its first rising in the Southern Hemisphere in late June or early July, marking the beginning of the new year in the MΔori lunar calendar.
What you're seeing in the video are parts of a beautifully moving hautapu ceremony performed just before dawn at Te Puia - Rotorua, NZ. The ceremony includes tohunga karakia (experts in rituals) reciting ancestral karakia (prayers) to the stars that make up the Matariki cluster. This is a time to remember the previous year and our loved ones who have passed, celebrate the present and welcome in the new year. π
The event also includes kai (food) cooked in te umu kohukohu whetΕ« (steaming earth oven of the stars). In the video, you see the steam billowing from the umu as the baskets of kai are uncovered. The steam rising into the sky is used as an offering to replenish the whetΕ« (stars), before feeding the manuhiri (guests). π₯
Following the ceremony, a day of fun and celebration was provided for everyone.
