We did it!

Huge thanks to rugby royalty Sir Wayne Smith KNZM and all those who attended our inaugural fundraiser event in partnership with the Taumarunui Women's Refuge on Saturday. In spite of the somewhat challenging weather conditions (!) a great day was had by all. Thanks also to Terri, Klara, Tessa and Viv from the Refuge for joining us and for speaking so passionately about your organisation. We're looking forward to totting up the figures to see how big a cheque we can write... The final high five goes to the Forgotten World Adventures staff members who donated their time, essentially working for free. You are all fabulous! A wonderful day for an extremely worthy cause. We look forward to collaborating again in the future!

"Maybe train travel is one way we can try to remember..." 🚂

Wonderful article by Emily Draper for AA Directions magazine - she boarded the Northern Explorer in Wellington, bound for Auckland, but stopped off in Taumarunui for a night at the glorious Omaka Lodge before spending the following day riding the rails with Forgotten World Adventures to the Republic of Whangamōmona.

As Emily confirms: "Travelling by rail forces you to enjoy the journey...You're forced to hit pause on the cult of busyness". Whether you're on the Northern Explorer or one of our rail carts, the feeling is the same. Just sit back and soak up the spectacular scenery! 🌈

A fantastic collaboration with the Great Journeys New Zealand team and our friends at Omaka Lodge - Kotahitanga. Thank you 👏

Nice little feature in Stuff about the 10-day North Island tour run by Vintage Glenbrook Railway which offers travellers the chance to jump on board our rail carts as part of their experience! Margaret and Max Grant from Palmerston North said the carts were one of the best things they'd done which is praise indeed. Many thanks for recommending us guys! 🫶

Jump on board with us and Sir Wayne Smith KNZM for this inaugural Ride for Refuge one day event. We are proud supporters of the Women's Refuge which provides vital support and services in the community in which we operate. All proceeds of the day go to the Refuge. Our wonderful staff are donating their time - huge thanks team! Please help support the women and families affected by violence - sadly, NZ is ranked as the worst developed country in the OECD for family violence. See our website for full event details 🛤

Construction of the first tunnel on the Stratford-Okahukura line begins back in 1901. One of 24 hand-built tunnels you can drive through by rail cart on our unique experiences. A remarkable feat of engineering with the whole line taking just under 32 years to build in harsh conditions - and this is just the beginning of the story...

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) continues – and today we're sharing the pūrākau (legend) of the mighty maunga we see on our railcart experiences, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Taranaki.

The three volcanoes of the Central North Island were originally four, because Taranaki was there as well. Both Tongariro and Taranaki were in love with the beautiful Pihanga, wife of Ruapehu.

Taranaki dared to make advances to Pihanga and was reproached by Tongariro and a mighty battle ensued between them. The earth shook and the sky became dark as the mountains belched forth their anger.

When the battle ended the lovely Pihanga stood close by Tongariro's side.

Taranaki, wild with grief and jealousy, angrily wrenched his roots from the ground and left the other mountains.

Weeping, he plunged towards the setting sun, gouging out a deep wide trench. When he reached the sea he turned north and stumbled up the coast. As he slept that night the Pouakai Ranges snared and trapped Taranaki in the place he now rests.

The next day a stream of clear water sprang from the side of Tongariro. It flowed down the deep scar Taranaki had left on his journey to the coast to form the Whanganui River, some say it was filled with Taranaki's tears (roimata) of sorrow.

There are those who say that Taranaki is silently brooding and will one day try to return inland again to fight Tongariro.

Our Story

A unique offer of self drive carts on rail through a remote, rugged and sparsely settled, distinctly natural, New Zealand landscape. The tours include a mixture of native bush, farmland and forestry. They pass through small communities on a now decommissioned rail line, that took over 30 years to build. With 24 tunnels and a variety of different bridges, this railway line offers visitors an opportunity to connect with natural New Zealand.

Other offerings under the Forgotten World Adventures umbrella include jet boat tours down the mighty Whanganui River including a walk into the Bridge to Nowhere, and Helicopter flights over the spectacular Whanganui National Park.

Dual Winners of the New Zealand Tourism NZME People’s Choice Award, Forgotten World Adventures makes the inaccessible accessible for the adventurous-at-heart!

Discover the secrets of the Forgotten World by booking online at www.fwa.co.nz, email [email protected] or call 0800 7245 2278.
