TE KUIA ROCK

Keeping Tradition Alive
At the entrance to Tauranga Harbour, at the foot of Mauao, there is a rock in the water called Te Kuia, the old lady. When the fishing boats go out in the open sea, the people on board throw over a piece of food or a small coin, an offering to the Kuia as they pass by this rock. This is also an offering to Tangaroa, god of the ocean, to ensure the success of their fishing trip. It is also a way of showing respect for the sea, for the power of the waves and the food resources to be found there.

My family has been giving offering to Te Kuia rock for 30 plus years now and we are not going to stop any time soon.

Overnight at Mayor Island is producing great fishing for kingfish as they feed hard getting ready for winter as the water temp starts to drop off.
With kingfish in the bin we headed out to try 2 Puka Knolls off Mayor Island
The Razor Tooth Gang (gemfish) were biting hard and we couldn't stay on the bottom long enough to get a hapuka so the boys were keen to try getting some snapper so we headed back to Mayor Island to do some reef fishing.
Catching a few snapper we headed for home with heavy bins of great eating fish
A great trip with the guys from up North

With a family group from over seas on board SHOWTIME we headed out to mayor Island to show them what New Zealands fishing is all about and with the seas flat for the best part of the day we did just that
Starting off with massive schools of blue mackerel and a marlin tuning them up hopes were high but the marlin wasn't interested in a live blue mackerel so we carried on out to mayor to fish for live bait snapper and kingfish

Once at mayor we quickly set up the gear and caught a heap of live koheru putting them back down there we getting nailed by kingfish upto 12kg and the strayline out the back got this really nice snapper pushing the high 20s

With fish in the bin we decided to go for an island sights seeing run around the island and stopping into south east bay for lunch and a walk

Then back on the SHOWTIME we set our sights on some big kingfish with the wind picking up We had to try a little harder to hold on the right spot and quickly having 3 livebaits stolen we were determined to get 1 on the 4th livebait we did just that hooking up to a massive kingfish the anglers were infor a fight with 3 change overs on the angler we managed to boat a very nice sized kingfish estimated to being 28kg with photos taken and alot of amazement in the sheer size of the fish we sent down another livebait and got nailed again by another big kingfish which was fighting really hard until the taxman decided to take his part ... boating the left overs we had left the kingfish was estimate to have been 22kg if hole and with that we headed for home with a nasty westerly picking up We had a big of a rough ride home but to top off the day we seen dolphins 3 miles off the mount with a beautiful sunset behind them

Heading to Mayor Knolls
We managed a nice kingfish, 2 small bass and a load of gemfish and then catching up with my brother rusty running Striker we carried on over to mayor Island to finish the day off catching a few reef fish and then a quick stop on the island it.

Quick shoot out the the Mayor Knolls midmorning produced some really nice eating size bass, jemfish and even a Japanese gurnard

Another banger of a day with seas flat we headed out from mayor Island with high hopes of catching a few bluenose which proved to be hard to catch for some reason (they are starting row up so it would be long till they are in full bite and easier to hunt down and catch) so we were working hard doing alot of winding the baits back up from deep water

We decided to turn our sights on hapuka and bass before the day came to and end and we managed a couple of nice fish with ella catching her personal best fish ever a 31kg bass and jono catching his best hapuka so far at 15kg

With the day coming to and end we shot back in to the tauranga game fishing club and weighed in our fish

Heading out wide pays off with hapuka bass and bluenose biting hard on our first day of 2
My long time friend and customer shairaz wanted to get into abit of deep sea fishing again with me on SHOWTIME so we set our sights on some of my hapuka spots around Mayor Island

Heading out to mayor pays off catching koheru was a bit of fun with kingfish trying to steal them as we pulled them in and hooking a 82cm kingfish put the Skipper infor a fight as he was on 3kg line we quickly released and with the kingfish biting hard 3 German customers had never caught big fish before and were in for a fight when hooking up
We quickly put 3 nice size eaters in the bin and turned our sights onto hapuka with the gemfish biting hard and fast it was a fight to get the rigs thur but we managed to land 1 nice hapuka but lost 2 to gemfish biting thur the trace
