The redwoods in New Zealand, specifically in the Whakarewarewa Forest near Rotorua, were introduced from California in 1901 as part of a government experiment to test the growth of various tree species in New Zealand’s unique climate and soil conditions. These trees, Sequoia sempervirens, also known as coastal redwoods, are native to the western United States, particularly California and Oregon.

Despite being much younger than their Californian counterparts, the redwoods in New Zealand have grown remarkably fast due to the favorable conditions, including abundant rainfall and rich volcanic soil. In California, redwoods can take centuries to reach their towering heights, but in Whakarewarewa Forest, they have achieved impressive growth in just over a century.

The forest has become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering scenic walking and biking trails, a treetop canopy walk, and an overall peaceful atmosphere amidst the towering trees. The Whakarewarewa Forest showcases the adaptability of redwoods and demonstrates the success of forestry experiments in the early 20th century.

Quick stop on desert road to capture these beauties:

1: Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand’s largest active volcano at 2,797 meters, is home to the Tūroa and Whakapapa slopes. These areas showcase the mountain’s dramatic landscapes and year-round alpine beauty.

2: Mount Doom, or Mount Ngauruhoe, is an iconic active stratovolcano in New Zealand, standing at 2,291 meters. It’s famous for its role as the fictional Mount Doom in the “Lord of the Rings” films. The mountain’s rugged, conical shape and volcanic landscape make it a striking feature of the Tongariro National Park.

Arapuni Swing Bridge in the Waikato region. Spanning the Waikato River, the bridge offers clear views of the Arapuni Dam and its surroundings. Built in 1925 to provide access to the Arapuni Dam construction site. The dam, part of the Waikato River hydroelectric power scheme, was one of New Zealand’s earliest large-scale hydroelectric projects. The bridge allowed workers and materials to cross the river safely during the dam’s construction and remains an important historical landmark. A great spot for walking, photography, or simply taking in the peaceful environment.
