Fiordland’s longest fiords, Te Houhou / George Sound. With a name that literally translates to ‘make peace’, you can imagine the tranquil setting that awaits. Te Houhou is 26 kilometres of forest-covered, sheer-cliffed inlet, which is over 1,500 metres wide at its broadest point. This stunning sound is entered by several rivers, with hikes that lead you from the fiord waters to majestic waterfalls and onto stunning lakes.

It's a fabulous playground and we are heading there early next month! We have a one time limited offer to add some ☀️ to your winter blues, with a last minute deal on one of our favourite set adventures - Slice of the Wild.

Had a beaut welcome to the 55th edition of the Mystery Creek Fieldays last week!

As newcomers to this event we were super impressed by the showcase of diversity, innovation and sustainability. We were also stoked to connect with new faces and it was especially cool to have some of our previous guests (our extended Wild whanau and friends of the Breaksea Girl) find us on the map and drop by to say Hi. What a treat!

Great company + good fun. We'll be back for another round for sure!

Meanwhile, if you entered our onsite competition at the Fieldays to win a spot on an epic five day Dusky Sound adventure into the Wild, we will be drawing the lucky winner on the 30th June - cross your fingers and toes! 🤞🦶

Lose the crowds, meet the locals.

A wild moment captured as resident bottlenose dolphins drop by to play the bow wave of the Breaksea Girl. Super cool!

Fiordland has three distinct pods of bottlenose dolphins which are thought to be the most southern resident populations also considered the habitat limit of the species.

They have been extensively studied since 1990 and show adaptations which set these apart from other populations around the world. In order to cope with the cooler water habitat, they are much larger (rotund), they have seasonal breeding, and respond to seasonal habitat changes.

The comprehensive photo - identification catalouge has helped identify that each pod have unique social structures; mostly attributed to their geographic isolation and ecological constraints.

Like many wild species, the viability of a sustainable population is at a constant threat. Another reason we never tire of moments like this. I mean who doesn't love dolphins. Special!

Scotty - legendary

Any epic adventure goes beyond the landscape, activities, weather and destination. It is as much about the company you keep and that dose of magic to pull it all together.

If you’re lucky enough to have Scotty aboard as crew, adventure guide, storyteller, trickster, aspiring bush cook, and more (probably should stop there😜), your time with Wild Fiordland will be bursting at the edges with richness.

Having a thirst for adventure and an unwavering drive to fill the basket with knowledge, Scotty has crafted a pretty neat existence in Fiordland and we LOVE having him as part of our Wild Fiordland whanau.

Arriving from the Kapiti coast to join Fi and her crew of sea kayakers, Scott spent the summer months guiding multi day trips in Doubtful and Milford Sound, whilst spending the quiet winter months venturing further into Fiordland.

The lure of hot showers, a warm bed and adventure mothership was real for Scotty and he leapt at opportunities to jump aboard the Breaksea Girl on our frequent escapes along the coast exploring other Fiords. With a keenness to learn; teamed with his solid outdoor experience, Scotty proved to be an awesome first mate.

Now, a few years down the track with many strings to his bow (strangely enough you might even see him out there in the bush with one - but that’s another story) Scott is considered a key part of the fabric of the Breaksea Girl and Wild Fiordland.

His knack to transport you to another place with storytelling, his gentle inquisitive nature, and charm is second to none. We quite enjoy sitting down to share a dram at the end of an adventure filled day, and we know our guests love doing so too. This dose of magic=legendary.

Kaupapa Moana

This week is NZ's annual week of celebrating our seas and the connections we have with it.

Our appreciation for this special toanga (the ocean and its inhabitants) is unwavering and the idea of expressing how critical it is to protect, lies in everyday actions - not limited to one week.

However we thought we'd take the opportunity to celebrate a historic moment which unfolded this week, as we think it's pretty cool.

Shackleton's expedition ship "Endurance" has been discovered 107 years after it sank in the Weddell Sea.

Apparently, she's sitting pretty on the seafloor at a depth of 3008m, upright, and in remarkably great condition for a timber ship of this nature. A deep sea polar biologist suggests that unsurprisingly, it appears that wood-munching animals found in other oceans, are not present in this area.

Frank Worsley was a NZ sailor and explorer who served on Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 -1917 as captain of the "Endurance", is our kiwi connection to this newly discovered toanga in the depths of the ocean.

This is Cool!

Huge congratulations to our friends up in the Coromandel, who have smashed it on the world stage with their award winning "Awildian" Coromandel Dry Gin.

We recently had the luxury of having these guys aboard the Breaksea Girl for a decent dose of Wild. Their spirits (not just the distilled ones) are Gold, and it's no surprise to see them standing up there on the podium. They are inspiring, hard working, have a strong affinity with wilderness and adventure, staunchly committed to being kind to the earth; and not to mention are bloody neat people.

Trust us, you'll want to wrap your hands around this award winning bottle of goodness. Well done - Rockstars!

Brian - aka MacGyver

You'll feel pretty comfortable stepping aboard the Breaksea Girl when she's in the hands of our skipper Brian.

Originally from Titahi Bay, Brian has spent much of his time exploring new places both on and off the water; and for the past decade and more, that time has been in Fiordland.

Along with his engineering background, he brings the relaxed, calm, and considered element to the party (he's actually pretty good at whipping up a tasty birthday cake too).

Brian has an innate ability to improvise and solve problems, attributes akin to working in remote settings; and not to mention MacGyver (plus he's never without his trusty 'Leatherman').

Brian is extremely proud of the Breaksea Girl, is passionate about protecting wilderness values, and feels privileged to be able to work and play in this special corner of Aotearoa.

When asked what he loves most of all... "its the family bach vibe the Breaksea Girl offers up to those who step aboard".....(we were all expecting him to say the Engine room😜).

Haerenga ki Te Rua O Te Moko
Journey to Fiordland

In Maori mythology, demi god Tū Te Rakiwhānoa carved the fiords using his adze perfecting his technique as he travelled north. From Rakituma/Preservation Inlet, up to Piopiotahi/Milford Sound the fiords and inlets become narrower and more defined as you travel north.

We have an upcoming epic haerenga (journey) to discover the fine work of Tū Te Rakiwhānoa.

This is an adventure for those wanting to sail above and beyond the average explorer, from Patea/Doubtful Sound to Piopiotahi/Milford Sound. Where mountains rise out of the water and each new corner turned, reveals another spectacular vista.

With several remote fiords, cloaked with history, secluded islands and untouched beaches that await, the wild world is your oyster.

Over five nights and six days there will be ample opportunity to swim, snorkel, stroll and kayak. Limited to just 10 guests, this is the perfect way to soak up the magic of this world class destination.

Gather a crew or join ours and book now for $2750 pp.

A picture of grace and strength.

Typically silent at sea, the Southern Bullers Mollymawk is one of our smallest Albatross which can live for over 45 years.

Right now, fledging should be underway at the Snares Islands. Amazingly, once fledged, these chicks do not touch the whenua for an average of six years!

We think they are pretty cool. Whats more, the bow of the Breaksea Girl is embellished with the image of these graceful birds - symbolic icon cruising the Fiordland Coast.
