the WILD is calling

Had a beaut welcome to the 55th edition of the Mystery Creek Fieldays last week!
As newcomers to this event we were super impressed by the showcase of diversity, innovation and sustainability. We were also stoked to connect with new faces and it was especially cool to have some of our previous guests (our extended Wild whanau and friends of the Breaksea Girl) find us on the map and drop by to say Hi. What a treat!
Great company + good fun. We'll be back for another round for sure!
Meanwhile, if you entered our onsite competition at the Fieldays to win a spot on an epic five day Dusky Sound adventure into the Wild, we will be drawing the lucky winner on the 30th June - cross your fingers and toes! 🤞🦶
Lose the crowds, meet the locals.
A wild moment captured as resident bottlenose dolphins drop by to play the bow wave of the Breaksea Girl. Super cool!
Fiordland has three distinct pods of bottlenose dolphins which are thought to be the most southern resident populations also considered the habitat limit of the species.
They have been extensively studied since 1990 and show adaptations which set these apart from other populations around the world. In order to cope with the cooler water habitat, they are much larger (rotund), they have seasonal breeding, and respond to seasonal habitat changes.
The comprehensive photo - identification catalouge has helped identify that each pod have unique social structures; mostly attributed to their geographic isolation and ecological constraints.
Like many wild species, the viability of a sustainable population is at a constant threat. Another reason we never tire of moments like this. I mean who doesn't love dolphins. Special!
