Our stargazing tours are becoming increasingly popular with guests.

Glen is a qualified ‘Dark Sky Ambassador’ with a passion for astronomy and sharing his knowledge.

He’ll show you 10-12 of the best deep-space objects, including planets, nebulae, stars and galaxies, using optical & digital telescopes, and astro-binoculars.

You may learn about the differences between the northern / southern hemispheres’ night sky, celestial navigation and Māori mythology. Small group sizes mean a truly immersive experience.

Woohoo!! 🎉 We’ve received Qualmark’s 5-Star accommodation grading and GOLD Sustainable Tourism Business Award for the second year running!

Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official and independent quality assurance organisation; a 5* accommodation grading signifies that the comfort, cleanliness and quality of the accommodation and its facilities are exceptional, and among the best available in New Zealand.

A GOLD Sustainable Tourism Business Award “recognises the best sustainable tourism businesses in New Zealand, with the delivery of exceptional customer experiences an integral part of everything they do. …[It] identifies those businesses leading the way in making the New Zealand tourism industry a world class sustainable visitor destination.”

Protecting the environment is one of our biggest focuses here at Fiordland Eco-Retreat; we love that our ongoing efforts are being recognised with this prestigious award.

Here’s to a great summer season ahead!

They’re big (bigger than a chicken), colourful, quirky looking and flightless.

And we have HUGE love for the takahē here at Fiordland Eco-Retreat! Glen’s entire career has centred around protecting and growing the population of this wonderful bird. And our old dog, Yuki, was also a takahē species dog, starting out as an eager 6 month old pup, and continuing right up until her retirement at the grand old age of 13.

No other bird started out the century being officially “extinct”, and then 75 years later, boasts a population that (just yesterday) reached the incredible milestone of 500 birds!!

SURELY the mighty takahē must be crowned New Zealand’s “Bird of the Century” for this mighty achievement!

Please vote for the takahē to be the NZ 2023 bird of the year / century.
Vote at www.birdoftheyear.org.nz

Voting closes this Sunday, 12 November 2023.
