New economic figures out for Timaru District show a small drop in GDP again, for the year to September 2024, but consumer spending over the period has remained solid.

Timaru's consumer spending (+4.8%) shows, that while things have got tighter, people in our district have continued to spend over the year. Ahead of Canterbury (+1.4%), and New Zealand (+0.5%).

New report on the value of cruise to Timaru is out, as we gear up for the new season, with first ship due 4 January 2025.

Passengers of cruise ships visiting Timaru in the past 12 months spent an estimated $229 each.

Venture Timaru are thrilled and humbled to win both the Innovative use of Technology award, and then the Supreme Award, at the annual EDNZ Best Practice Awards last night, for the Mid & South Canterbury CoDrivr Virtual Reality Driving Simulator project.

Delivering a simulator into every secondary school across Mid & South Canterbury, providing our rangitahi with real road experiences without real world consequences to give them the confidence to start on their driver education and licensing journey has been so rewarding.

Big shout out to the brains behind it all Rhys, Claire and their team at our developers GFactor of Dunedin. It's been great working with you to bring the collective vision, of enhanced and accessible driver education to our next generation of drivers, to "reality" - a first for NZ.

Progressing and implementing this initiative has only been possible with the unwavering support of our hugely valued and equally determined funders and partners - massive thanks to you all.

Did you know?

- 1 in 3 South Cantabrians could be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

- The Cancer Society provides support to cancer patients and their whānau or carers through cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery in South Canterbury. It offers information, emotional and practical support, and referrals to other agencies. The Centre can also arrange counselling, or provide transport for appointments and may be able to provide accommodation.

- The Cancer Society are not government funded and rely on community funding to be able to provide the above services which is why Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s biggest event of the year. – Friday, 30th August 2024.

- ANZ are proud to have been major sponsors of the Cancer Society and Daffodil Day for over 30 years. ANZ South Canterbury are excited to present the ANZ Challenge Series this Daffodil Day. All funds raised local, stay local.
