📢Desert Road to re-open tomorrow, Friday 14 March, after a two month closure.

Credit where credit is due to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Waikato & Bay of Plenty, they are smashing out this State Highway 1 work.

In just over 8 weeks they have rebuilt and repaired 28 lane kilometres of road (12 lane kms more than planned) and completely rebuilt the deck of the Mangatoetoenui Bridge.

We know it's inconvenient - especially as we try to maintain and reseal our local roads at the same time - BUT potholes and uneven road surfaces are no fun either.

State Highway 1 Road Closure Update!!

State Highway 1 between Rangipo and Waiouru will be closed to the public from the 13th of January 2025 for 2 Months

Access for Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures clients will be given from both the Rangipo (Northern) and Waiouru (Southern) ends from the 13th of Jan until the 22nd of January and then again from the 21st of February until the road opens again (estimated to be early March).
Expected Delays:
Traffic from the South, no delays
Traffic from North, Expect up to 15-20 minutes in delays during this period.

Between 22nd January and 21st of February no access from the North will be available. All traffic will have to come from the South through Waiouru.
Traffic from the North will have to detour through National Park and Ohakune (1.15hr increase in travel time.

During this period Taupo - KAA will roughly a 2.5hr drive.

This is going to be a very difficult time for a new business during our peak 2 months. If you are thinking of doing the ride please, still do during this time the business will be greatly appreciated.
