TRAIL STATUS UPDATE: Waihi to Waikino
DATE: 14 February 2025 - UPDATED 5 March 12.20pm
ISSUE: The Trail between Waihi and Waikino will be closed for concrete works on the following dates: Thursday, 6 and 7 March, and Thursday 13 and 14 March. We will reopen at 3pm on the last day of each works.

Wow, it’s been 10 years since the Gold Discovery Centre opened its doors!
It was Friday 26th September 2014 that the official opening took place. At that time the GDC included the Waihi isite Visitor Information Centre, the Waihi Gold Experience and Waihi Gold Mine Tours. Waihi Bicycle Hire has been added to mix in recent years.
Come and help us celebrate our 10-year milestone with ½ price entry to the Waihi Gold Experience from the 20th of September to the 30th September.

Part-time summer work at WAIHI'S GOLD DISCOVERY CENTRE and isite.

The Waihi Gold Discovery Centre is a vibrant visitor hub offering tourism services to visitors from around the country and the world. As we prepare for the up-coming summer season we are looking for more team members to help deliver our great range of visitor experiences.

We have casual part-time positions available for our Mine Tours, information and customer services and Bike Hire over the busy summer season. For all these rolls you’ll need to be a people person and have great customer service experience and skills. For our Mine Tours you will need a clean driver’s license and having a class 2 license and passenger endorsement would be an advantage.

If you like interacting with people from all parts of the world, and think you’ve got skills that will add value to their experience with us, then we’d like to hear from you.

The removal of dangerous trees at Mautohe Cathedral Cove next week marks the beginning of the physical work to restore temporary walking access to this iconic beach!

The track to the popular beach has been closed to the public since February 2023, when it was extensively damaged by extreme weather events including Cyclone Gabrielle.

⚠️ Arborists will be on site next week to begin an estimated three weeks of work to remove more than 30 trees. Entering the closed track while the tree felling operation is underway could result in serious injury and may lead to delays in the work programme.

This coastal landscape is prone to storm damage, landslides and rockfalls making it a challenging place to maintain access and support high visitor numbers. We have two work programmes for the location, the first to reinstate temporary walking access to the cove for this summer, and the other to determine a long-term visitor management at the site.

Accessing Mautohe Cathedral Cove remains a marine-only experience until December.
