We have decided to try taking direct online bookings at Makai Lodge in July. The price would depend on the date you wish to book your holiday.

* All nights in July are $250 per night. (incl GST)
* We allow one night bookings during the week and 2 night minimum in weekend (Friday/Saturday night or Saturday Sunday night)
* $200 fully refundable bond
* Pets are allowed by arrangement
* Booking form to be filled out on booking and payment to be made in full. A refund is available until 1 month prior to booking for peak season and 48 hours off season.
* We are GST registered, all prices includes GST and tax. Invoices can be supplied if needed.

We are so happy that the cycle and walkway from Makai Lodge to Waipu Cove is completed. This is a community funded project ( Waipu Cycle & Walkway) that would love further donations to link the current path to Waipu.

Bring your bike with you on holiday, we can provide secure storage if you let us know beforehand. The bike ride along Waipu Cove beach is great at low tide

Most seaside towns go quiet over winter but Waipu has a Winter Festival in June and July. There are numerous events planned including ice skating, curling, golf and the races.

We've had a busy year with only one week that hasn't had a booking. We were stoked today to get recognition from AirBNB for Makai Lodge. We are in their top 10% of hosts which is pretty cool considering it is an international company.

We love hosting our guests and look forward to providing them with a warm place to hibernate in over winter. Those sunny winter days on the beach are still great and there is plenty to do in the area. Promote Waipu has come up with an amazing calender that we will update you with in a few days.

Thanks to all our guests and supporters, we can't do this without you 🙂

Makai Lodge is ready for your winter break away. We have a heat pump, warm winter blankets, outdoor bath and hot inside shower plus games and plenty of books to read. Come and enjoy walking on the beach or enjoy the local cafes and restaurants. There is so much to do, or you can just relax :-)

Waipu Cove haven with amazing view

Hello Dogs,

Just letting you know how good Makai Lodge is for us all to stay at. The modern clean, accommodation is on a farmlet, back from the road and has plenty of room for balls to be thrown for you. The view is amazing and you and your owner can sit back and relax and watch the ocean or they can have an outdoor bath. It is only a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland, which is great as I sleep all the way.

At Waipu Cove itself, dogs can roam free if you’re well behaved and it’s fun to jump in the waves. The track from Waipu Cove to Langs allows us to go on lead and it is a great walk for our owners too. If they want a good workout, we can do the Langs view walk on lead, which has stunning views over Bream Bay. Uretiti Beach allows us to run off lead as far as we want to go, it’s great!

After all this exercise you can go with your owner to The Cove a high quality restaurant and café located down the road. They offer pats and fresh water along with a very nice meal for your owners.

We have had a busy summer at Makai Lodge with only two one night vacancies so far. This gives us a chance for a good tidy up and to mow the lawns. Our feedback for the lodge has been terrific! Waipu Cove has been amazing, the weather is great, water warm and clear and there have been a lot of events on in the area.

We have a few nights available at the end of Feb if you thinking of a well desrved break away.

Makai Lodge is very happy to support EV owners that come to stay. We don't charge any extra for you to charge your vehicle and welcome charging the cars during daylight hours when our solar panels are operating.

There is also a "chargenet" fast charger located in town for a quick boost.

We are pleased that summer is nearly here and are getting the place ready for our numerous bookings over the holidays. I have opened the bookings until Anzac weekend and it is great to see many of our guests returning for another holiday.

Spring is in the air at Waipu Cove and our solar power App installed by Hubands Energy shows that we are getting fair bit of sun. Daylight savings has started so the longer days are ideal for your holidays at Makai Lodge. We have quite a few bookings but there are still some spaces. Don't forget that we allowed peoples well behaved pets.

It is time to think about your Labour Weekend and Christmas holidays. We have opened the books on Air BNB for Makai Lodge until January 2024. The booking of dates for the Christmas break was taken up pretty quickly but we do have some other dates available. Our feedback from our guests has been so amazing, come and enjoy what Waipu Cove has to offer.

Hubands Energy has installed 8 more solar panels on Makai Lodge. We're pretty happy with this company and highly recommend them. If you use them, mention a referral from us, you will get a credit of $99 and so will we. We will donate ours to Waipu Cycle & Walkway a great local charity and hard working group of volunteers.

Wayne and I enjoyed a winter walk on the beach at Waipu Cove yesterday. The beach was quiet no waves, shells everywhere and the dog could run free. We were super excited to be walking alongside two orcas swimming towards Whangarei Heads. They were so close to shore. MAJESTICAL :-)

Cape cod has come to Waipu Cove!! Imagine sitting outside in the sun enjoying the peace and quiet.

Makai lodge is taking bookings for the upcoming school holidays. There is plenty to do in the area and Waipu is hosting the winter festival with some fun events being held.

Winter is about to arrive and Makai Lodge is ready. We offer a lovely cosy hideaway for those winter breaks. The beach is great to walk on during the stormy days, followed by a nice morning tea or lunch at our friendly beachfront local The Cove Café.

Makai Lodge has heat pumps, woollen blankets, outdoor bath, books and board games available to make the holiday more enjoyable. Don't forget that there still are those beautiful Autumn days available in May.

Check out the new outdoor bath that has been installed at Makai Lodge. It has a hot water tap included, bubble bath supplied and look at the stunning view!! It is the perfect ending to a day out at the beach or fishing.

New Zealand has certainly been affected by the weather this "summer". Makai Lodge was lucky to escape with minimal damage to the garden but the roads in the area have been affected by slips and washouts.

We are pleased that the Brynderwyns is open with limited access and Cove Road through Mangawhai will be open to through traffic soon. There is no effect on traffic from the North.

Our current guests are enjoying the lovely weather and we look forward to hosting more guests with Easter and school holidays rapidly approaching.

Happy New Year. We have enjoyed a great holiday and so have many of our guests. Check out their reviews on our Air BNB page!

There is a beautiful walk near Makai Lodge, along the coastline from Waipu Cove to Langs Beach. It takes 45 minutes (you need to allow time for photos and to admire the scenery). A local group, Wairahi tracks, has put a lot of work in over winter to improve the accessability of the track. It is well worth going for a walk along it! and dogs are allowed on a leash.

It's time to kick back and enjoy Christmas!

Thanks to all of the supporters of Makai Lodge. We've had a great year with lots of guests and some improvements to make your stay more enjoyable.

We have a few plans for next year, including an outdoor bath. We hope you're looking forward to next year too.

Makai Lodge has been pretty busy lately and has a full calendar in Summer. I took advantage of a break in bookings to clean the couches and do a spring clean. These bissell cleaners are great!!

We're really proud of the comments we get about how clean Makai Lodge is. We go to the extra effort to make people feel welcome. I am also very lucky to have Tash to help me.

We hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. We know the weather was beautiful at Waipu Cove on Sunday, check out the solar readings on our solar panels. It can only get better as the days get longer!!

We encourage people with EV vehicles to use Makai Lodge. There is no additional cost to recharge your battery at the lodge or there are fast chargers located in Waipu. You can plug your car in and grab a coffee and bite to eat at one of the great quality cafes.

We had local company tree removal Eagle eye tree service come in last year to chop down a huge pine tree on our property. We are tree lovers so it was a difficult decision but it is better for the property in the long run.

Waipu Cove has amazing bird life, especially Tuis. To plan for the future, we have done extensive planting of natives and other trees that the birds will like. I'm pretty excited as some of the trees are becoming well established. It has been a bit hard at times to find the right plant for the coastal environment
