Ruakuri Cave was discovered approximately 400 to 500 years ago when a hunter travelling in a war party with the Kawhia Chief Tane Tinorau was attacked by a pack of dogs living in the cave. The dogs were caught but the name was created 'Ruakuri' meaning den of dogs.
