There has been a big rainfall event here these last few days, with a whopping 275mm of rain falling on the hills of the Mangawhitikau!!!
We checked on the glowworms this morning and they had a wet night, most glowworms survived which is a great relief. And all the tracks/boats are in good, but slightly muddy conditions!
It normally takes days for the water to recede and then can tours resume. So hopefully Wednesday or Thursday we will be back into operation. Fingers crossed the forecast rain over the next few days doesn’t eventuate into much 🤞

We have been showing caves in Waitomo for more than 30 years – in the beginning as cavers and innovators. We added adventure to Waitomo with the introduction of Black Water Rafting to New Zealand’s outdoor portfolio.
Now – proudly bringing you a softer and more reflective cave tour – we continue our passion for immersing visitors into an unforgettable underground experience.
Backing us up, our local guides will share the same knowledge, enthusiasm, care and sense of humour.
We bring you these caves in partnership with the Mason Family and Graymont Quarry, the cave’s owners. The cave of the Spirit is now protected under a QE2 covenant. The Spellbound Glowworm Cave is a part of Mangawhitikau Cave, a notable cave of New Zealand and a national treasure.
We would also like to acknowledge Ngati Kinohaku the land’s traditional owners, with whom we share a warm friendship. Their contribution of a pou (traditional way marker), their knowledge and support are greatly appreciated.
Spellbound belongs to ACKMA (Australasian Caves and Karst Management Association). We are Qualmark endorsed. Pete received a New Zealand Order of Merit for his contribution to New Zealand tourism, and a New Zealand Walking Access Award for his contribution to improving and caring for the Te Araroa Trail locally.
