Cheers to crustaceans and 🍺
A new species of marine isopod has been named after Wellington brewpub the Fork and Brewer.
Pentaceration forkandbrewer was given its scientific name after Fork and Brewer brewed the best crustacean-inspired beer as part of ‘The Crustacean Beer Competition’ at the 10th International Crustacean
Congress last year.
“We wanted a unique way to showcase and celebrate our marine world. People love beer, so we thought - why not immortalise a local brewery by giving them the chance to be forever included in scientific literature?” said marine biologist Rachael Peart who co-created the competition with colleague Kareen Schnabel.
A few of the Crabital’s best breweries entered their creations but the Fork and Brewer took out the title with their beer inspired by the low country boil-up from southern USA.
Potatoes and flaked corn were mashed in with the stout grain, and a few prawns added to infuse a subtle briny foundation to the beer.
Rachael and Kareen also named a deep-sea ghost shrimp Vulcanocalliax beervana in recognition of Beervana who supported the competition.
