We recently had some time on our awa with our new friend Ken. He came from the USA to study the law in making our awa a legal enity. Here is just a small response from him on the river trip along with a few photos.

I am back home in the US and just wanted to thank you for sharing your love and connection to the awa with me on our trip down the Whanganui. It was a fantastic experience.

Take care,

It's official: Wanganui can be Whanganui too

Mayor Annette Main today welcomed Parliament’s passing of a Bill which will end confusion about which is the correct spelling of the District’s name.
“The amendments in the Statutes Amendment Bill (No3) mean that the names Whanganui and Wanganui can now be gazetted and either, or both, can be used in official documentation,” Mayor Main said.
“This confirms the Minister of Land Information’s original announcement in 2009 that either spelling is valid and will give people more clarity about their right to choose which alternative they recognise and prefer to use.
“While many people have been making the choice already during the time it has taken for the Minister’s decision to be formalised, it is good to now have it being confirmed through the gazetting process that either spelling will be recognised.”
Mayor Main said there was no plan at this time to change the name of the District Council.

Kia ora koutou,

Whanganui River Week 2012 is nearly here... This year sees a 5-day programme of river-related films and talks across two venues: Lunchtime Docos at the Gonville Library Community Room and Films & Speakers at the Quaker Meeting Room, 256 Wicksteed St.

Films are food for thought & starters for conversation so please come along and join in the discussions.

One highlight will be a talk and Q&A with Dr Mike Joy, a freshwater ecologist & senior lecturer at Massey, who is a well-known advocate for improving river quality and saving our endemic species. Awarded Forest & Bird's Old Blue last year for his ongoing efforts to educate the public (including the PM), Mike will speak at the Save Our Streams session, alongside two excellent NZ documentary shorts: Longfin and the award-winning River Dog - which he also features in.
Save Our Streams: 7:30pm, Friday 9th November, 256 Wicksteed St.

Please see the attached poster for the full programme and website www.whanganuiriverweek.org.nz for more info on films and speakers.

River Week is about celebrating the Whanganui River in all its facets. It’s about reconnecting people with the river – getting them back in, on and around the river. It’s about learning about...
