We have had a lot of interest over the last week or so in scheduling a Rapid Runner Special. Enough to fill the boat.
Folks, nothing would delight us more than to head upriver in this beautiful weather however, river is now too low to safely undertake the journey.
The river is likely to be too low to operate this particular trip until the middle of March.
We will definitely keep you all updated and announce future availability as soon as we have a bit of certainty over the river conditions.

What a day!
We had a fantastic run from Upokongaro through to just below Gentle Annie this afternoon. There was just enough cloud cover to temper the heat and it was nice to slow down for a while and appreciate the sights and sounds around us.
A huge thank you to our wonderful clients for the day, we really enjoyed ourselves too and thanks for lunch!

It’s gonna be a good day folks.
Heritage River Cruise departing at 11 am this morning.
It wasn’t very pleasant when we left from our berth this morning but by the time we arrived at Upokongaro for our cyclists, the sun had come out to play.
Little bit of a late start to our pick ups from the Mountains to Sea NZ trail but it was good to get a big group through today from mountainbikestationnz

Our website is back up and running, the next sailing will be Friday at 11 am.
We're very grateful for the relationship we have with the Upokongaro School Community
Spending a couple of days helping with the prep work on the new sandpit and swings, as well taking the Senior students out as the (worst kept!!) surprise for the tremendous effort put into their Waka Ama lessons has been an incredibly rewarding way to start the summer.
Thank you to all the staff, students and parents who've been so welcoming. We look forward to doing more with you

Just a little bit breezy out there today but a big thank you to everybody who came down for a cruise on the river.
Numbers were down on previous years but we know times are hard and the weather wasn’t exactly fantastic this year.
We will do our best to put on at least one more day of specials this year, but other than that we will be doing the 30 minute specials for Vintage Weekend 2025.
Our regular cruises can be booked at www.motorvesselwairua.co.nz
Come down and join us this weekend for a 30 minute cruise!
Motor Vessel Wairua
Heritage River Cruises and Personalised Charters
Motor Vessel Wairua was built over in London by Yarrow & Co. Shipbuilders back in 1904 and was sent out here as a kit-set, to be assembled on the riverbank just opposite our mooring at Moutoa Gardens.
She was launched and commissioned into service in November 1904 and ran on the middle section of the Whanganui River between Pipiriki (about 60 Miles upstream of Whanganui) and Whakahoro (a further 55 Miles above Pipiriki).
Wairua carried passengers and cargo along that section of the river until about 1938 before being withdrawn from service and brought back down to Whanganui to be used as a pontoon for some of the larger riverboats that were still operating.
Eventually she sank at her moorings and spent almost 40 years buried in the mud of the river before being salvaged by a group of local men in 1987. They spent 19 years restoring her back to the vessel you see today. Wairua was re-launched in 2006 to begin her second lease of life on the river.
Motor Vessel Wairua has a unique propulsion system we call tunnel drive. This means the 28” propeller is up above the vessel’s flat bottom. This keeps it safe from rocks and logs we encounter in the rapids of the lower Whanganui River. 9 Tunnel drive vessels were built for the river service, Motor Vessel Wairua is the last surviving vessel of this type that is still in operation.
