Kinky Boots Day Tour!
We had an absolutely amazing time taking a group of our tour Friends from Whangarei to the Civic - Auckland, to experience the fabulous Kinky Boots Musical.
The Journey was event-filled & exciting as the show itself, as we made it a day out to remember. We all hopped on board and hit the road, enjoying each other's company and the anticipation of the musical. And we weren't let down! What an amazing show!

You, Me & Friends “Amazing Places”
*** The Lost City of Angkor ***

Have you ever dreamed of exploring ancient ruins, wandering through thick jungles, and discovering lost cities? If so, then a visit to the Lost City of Angkor should be at the top of your travel bucket list.

Located in the heart of Cambodia, the Lost City of Angkor is an ancient temple complex that dates back to the 9th century. With over 400 square kilometers of dense jungle and more than a thousand temples, it's easy to get lost in the maze of crumbling ruins and towering trees.

One of the most impressive temples you'll encounter is The Bayon, which is located in the center of the city. This temple is known for its many stone faces, which gaze out from every direction and create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere.

Another must-see temple is Ta Prohm, which is famous for its enormous trees that have grown up around and through the ruins. As you explore this temple, you'll feel as though you've stepped into a scene from an Indiana Jones movie.

Of course, no visit to Angkor would be complete without a trip to Angkor Wat, the most iconic temple in the complex. This massive temple was built in the 12th century and is known for its stunning architecture and intricate carvings.

As you wander through the various temples of Angkor, you'll feel as though you're on an epic adventure, discovering hidden secrets and lost treasures around every corner. You'll marvel at the intricate carvings on the walls of the temples, and imagine what life was like for the people who lived here centuries ago.

Whether you're an intrepid explorer or simply a lover of history and culture, a visit to the Lost City of Angkor is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

You, Me & Friends “Amazing Activities”
*** Waitomo Caves ***

It was the only day of rain on our tour – but the drizzle steadily progressed to downpour! We arrived at Waitomo Caves and scurried from the van into the ultra modern complex that houses the ticket office, cafe, and gift shop. Here we meet our guide, and started our first Cave adventure. “Wai (water) tomo (hole)” was the first Cave to be fully explored in 1887 by local Maori Chief Tane Tinorau accompanied by an English surveyor Fred Mace.

From the relatively small door in the rocky hillside, we gradually descended into the underground limestone wonderland. We were guided through the labyrinth of tunnels and caves, all cleverly illuminated to highlight the surreal formations on every wall, floor and ceiling. Waitomo’s hour underground culminated with a blackwater boat ride on the river to view the celestial Glowworm lights.

Our next adventure was Aranui Cave. We trekked the short bushwalk to the entrance, then entered what was to be the most spectacular of the three Cave visit. The formations in this cave were more intricate, more interesting, and more abundant than the other two. Even though a shorter walk, it was here that we spent the most time admiring natures artwork.

Our final Cave experience was Ruakuri. The previous entrance was once very close to Aranui, but due to the discovery of a burial tomb had been sealed, and a new entrance made in 2004. This entrance is a stunning 160m ramp that spirals around and around 12 metres down.

Ruakuri was a fascinating 1.2km walk deep deep underground, with the slightly unnerving sound of the thundering subterranean river concealed by rock walls. Our tour concluded with our young operatically trained guide “Pippin” giving us a stunning rendition of “Hallelujah” that resonated beautifully as we climbed the ramp back to the surface.

Waitomo Caves are definitely a “must see” activity in New Zealand.

You, Me & Friends “Favourite Places”
*** Kiwi spotting on Stewart Island ***

Situated at the very bottom of the world, Stewart Island Rakiura still feels like a frontier land. The early inhabitants were hard men and women in an unforgiving climate. I think it still takes some fortitude to live the island life – but what a fantastic place to visit!

A highlight of our time on the island started with a 4pm meeting at the Four Square for pre-ordered pies, muffins and a Bottle of Ned Pinot Gris. We feasted on the tables outside the supermarket, then checked in for our 5pm Kiwi Encounter tour.

We boarded our catamaran and sailed over to “The Neck” where our kiwi spotting was to take place.

“The Neck” is a long peninsula of land attached to mainland Stewart Island, but thin enough to be able to maintain a predator-free environment for the kiwis. We landed just after dusk, then armed with torches we followed our guide into the cold, cold forest night. We hadn’t been walking for more than 10 minutes before the guides white torch light turned to red, indicating he had found our quarry. The red light lit up the forest floor, showing off a young bird feeding on grubs. So fantastic to see this rare bird, the symbol of our country – in the wild!

Further along, the bush track turned to sand as we emerged onto the beach, and spotted another kiwi so completely engrossed in digging for sand hopper bugs that it paid no attention to us at all.

Again the red light lit up the scene, and we crowded round to view this special bird.

Afterwards we spent some time on the beach taking in the Stewart Island Dark Sky reserve. The coast night sky showed us in minute detail all of the constellations that the Southern Hemisphere had on display. We even saw shooting stars, satellites, and a strange unidentified slow-moving light high in the heavens.

A very special night in a very special place!

You, Me and Northland “Fun Activities”
*** The Parrot Place, Kerikeri ***

A cool little place not far from the Kerikeri stone store is The Parrot Place Bird Display and Breeding Centre.
The centre hosts about 300 birds from around the world, but by far the most entertaining thing about your visit is that you get to interact up close and personal with some of their stars!

It’s quite a thrill to have these exotic beauties land on you and and chatter in your ear. Buy a cupfull of birdy nibbles on the way in to ensure that you will have plenty of avian friends all the way through the centre.

You, Me & Friends had a great day last Saturday hosting the "Friends at Large" club on a daytour to the fabulous Monganui Waterfront Festival. The weather really turned it on for a stunning Northland summers day. Good music, great food, relaxed vibe and great company. Will definitely do it again next year!
