The Legacy of Seaplanes in Panama, Isthmian Airways, (1929-1936)

Bahia Honda, Unknown Jewel of the Pacific

Bahia Honda on Panama's Pacific Coast is one of those rare remote destinations. And the location of one of the most exclusive private island hideaways in Central America. Yet the area also offers unique kayaking and other adventure tourism activities, for the rest of us.

Isla Simca is a 270-acre island hideaway owned by French businessman Jean Pigozzi. The island and residences offers a sense of privacy and luxury found in very few places on earth. We have heard that the island can be rented for a week, starting at $250,000 for you and up to thirty friends.

Only 15 miles northwest of Isla Coiba, the sheltered Bahia Honda and the surrounding islands are extremely gorgeous. There are no nearby roads. Piñas Bay & Tropic Star Lodge, Darién

Piñas Bay (Bahía de Piñas) is located along Panama’s southern Pacific coast in the Darién Province. Recognized as Central America's most incredible fishing region. And soon accessible by seaplane.

The sheltered bay is 56 km (35 miles) from the Colombian border and is becoming a gateway to the amazing culture and wildlife to be found in this new frontier of the world.

Emberá Village Of Mogue, The Darien

The Darién region of Panama has been inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years. Even today the region remains extremely remote and isolated. And soon accessible by seaplane.

Passing over 17th century Spanish fortifications, our seaplane lines up to land in the Rio Mogue and soon glides to the banks of the Emberá community of Mogue. Residents live as they have for generations. A subsistence life of fishing and growing corn, and now the welcome addition of tourism that allows them to share the language and traditions they strive to maintain.

A day trip allows your hosts to provide a typical indigenous lunch and learn more of their culture and life. Or stay a night or two in a native tamboa, the open-style house of the village, erected on trunks above the ground. Walk the jungle trails with your host to search out the home of the native Harpy Eagle, Panama's national bird. Or kayak up the river in search of other birds and wildlife.

La Marea, Darién

La Marea is an almost unknown spot in the remote Darien region of Panama. And soon accessible by seaplane.

Río Tuira, Darien
The new frontier for the world

The Río Tuira is the largest and most remote river in Panama. The river rises into the remote Darien Highlands (Serranía del Darién) region and is 106 miles (170 km) long, almost reaching the border with Colombia. Deep in a tropical rain forest basin, the territory offers wildlife and cultural expedition opportunities for the most adventurous traveler. And now accessible by seaplane.

The Chocó Indians are a large, yet little-studied tropical rain forest group occupying the Pacific lowlands from northern Ecuador to the Panama Canal. Primarily Chocó Indian indigenous communities Our seaplane expeditions will visit agriculturalists, they are also experts at hunting and fishing, still experts in hunting with bow and arrow and with blowguns and poisoned darts.

The Chocó have legends of battles with the neighboring Kuna and they were successful in repulsing the Spanish on several occasions in the 17th century.

The Darién Chocó have developed an adaptive strategy that may allow them to maintain control of land and resources they might otherwise lose. We know that sustainable tourism activities enabled by seaplane travel will contribute to the economic viabilities of these remote indigenous communities.

La Miel, Guna Yala (San Blas)
A Safe Oasis on the Panama - Colombia Border... Virgin Rainforest Meets an Idyllic Tropical Beach

How about finding a safe oasis in the middle of virgin rain forest that is also just steps from from an idyllic tropical beach. And the opportunity to walk across one of the most remote borders in the Americas. At the Caribbean termination of the mysterious and unpredictable 266 km long Colombian-Panamanian border, there is only one place that offers that: La Miel.

A site that was once the route of illustrious navigators and pirates, and even captured the imagination of Christopher Columbus. From the jungle side of La Miel there is another unique attraction in Panama: the steep paths that lead to the border landmark of Colombia. With a guide and under the watchful eye (and protection) of the Panama border police Senafront headquarters unit, you can conquer the demanding ascent to Hito Grayskull for a photo standing next to the flags marking the Panama and Colombia borderline.

Beyond the natural attributes of La Miel, its main resource is its happy people. They earn their living from fishing, commerce and tourism, living in a Caribbean breeze and clear nights, which seems divorced from stress. This is part of the Guna Yala territory, but the people of the region are mostly Afro-descendants, and accent with something of evocation towards the coastal-Colombian.

La Miel is about as secluded a spot as you’ll find in the Americas. Closer to Colombia than it is any other Panamanian town or village. An experience to remember.

To view from the air the connecting link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is to realize the true greatness of this tremendous engineering achievement. A flight over the Canal, from ocean to ocean, provides an experience never to be forgotten - a mandatory experience while in Panama following in the tradition of the 1930’s Isthmian Airways.

We take off from our Trump Ocean Club Water Terminal on the Pacific Ocean and the spectacular skyline of Panama City is quickly replaced by the magnificence of the Panama Canal. We fly next to the Miraflores Locks, the Culebra Cut, the Bridge of the Americas and the expanse of Lake Gatun.
