The Panamanian people are friendly and accommodating. English is generally spoken in the larger centers such as David or Panama City, but of course a Spanish phrase book can come in handy. The town of San Felix is the just an 8$ taxi ride away and is situated on the Pan Americana highway. If traveling by bus from Panama City - this is your stop. The beach is exceptional for swimming and novice/intermediate surfing. Rip currents are not a problem at Playa Las Lajas. Surf boards can be rented down at El Mundo Bar (the German bar and restaurant) for a small fee. You'll likely spend an hour or two there each day as the food is sublime and very well priced. They also have free Wi-Fi there so you can be sure you'll meet other travelers there too.
