La Mola 🎨

Molas are a brightly colored textile art created by the Kuna tribe from San Blas Blas, region of Panama. Mola means cloth or clothing in the Kuna language. These panels of stacked cloth are used to make women’s blouses. Girls learn to make these at an early age and can spend up to 100 hours making one Mola!

🐋 Whale season is almost here!
Humpback whales arrive in Panama from July to October. They can be spotted all season long on the Pacific coast, but the chances multiply in August.

💡Worth knowing: Never try to swim or dive close to them. The whale watching time should not exceed 30 minutes and only 15 if is a mother with her.

El Diablo Rojo 🚌🇵🇦

The red devils were Panama’s main transportation system for 40 years. Implanted in 1973 during the military dictatorship of General Omar Torrijos, they were imported from the United States, where they operated as school buses and transformed in Panama to provide a public service.

In general, the nickname “Diablo Rojo” (Red Devil) came from the poor service they provided, with countless complaints from users about the buses and their “palancas” (hired drivers) due to accidents and deaths caused by their excessive speed as they were constantly competing with each other to pick up passengers. Nearly 1,500 red devils provided daily service to more than 600,000 Panamanians.

These buses were decorated by urban artists who decorated the “devils” as if all the cans that covered the buses were a large canvas directed by the bus owner. Religious scenes, actors and actresses, models, family members, etc., were the favorite subjects to illustrate the buses. 🎨

Happy World Recycling Day ! ♻️♻️♻️

May 17th is World Recycling Day, raising awareness about the importance of treating waste and taking a stand for environmental protection. While the celebration began in 1994, UNESCO officially proclaimed it in 2005. This day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of treating waste properly to protect the future of planet Earth and reduce environmental pollution. In this context, it is essential to reflect on our consumption practices and adopt daily measures that contribute to a more sustainable management of resources.

As the official sponsor of the NGO « Botellas de Amor » in Panama, today is an even more special celebration for us.

📍Soberania National Park and Discovery Center 🍃

Soberanía National Park is a national park in Panama located near the banks of the Panama Canal in the provinces of Panamá and Colón, about 25 kilometers from Panama City. You can first stop at the Rainforest Discovery Center where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the forest and canopy bird species from a 100 ft. high observation tower. There are also hummingbird feeders where you can see and photograph up to 10 different species of the tiny acrobats!

You can continue your exploration hiking on Pipeline Road, a graveled and easy path that goes through a large area of the park’s rainforest. Here, monkeys such as white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys and the diminutive Geoffroys’ tamarins are very frequent sights. The area is home to other mammals like three-toed sloths, agoutis or anteaters. The park also boasts an impressive list of 525 species of birds.

📍El Puente de las Americas 🌉 The Bridge of the Americas 🇵🇦

The Bridge of the Americas, was inaugurated on October 12, 1962. It links the towns of Panama City to the northeast, and the district of Arraiján to the southwest. The bridge is made of steel weighing, almost 17,000 tons and measures 1,654 meters in length.

Its construction is due to the United States, which initially called it the Thatcher Ferry Bridge, in honor of Maurice H. Thatcher (former member of the canal commission that proposed its creation).

With the construction of the Panama Canal, the cities of Colon and Panama were separated from the rest of the republic. After the opening of the canal, the increase in the number of vehicles, along with the construction of a new highway in the direction of Chiriqui, west of Panama, increased the need for an efficient way to cross the canal, making it a hot spot for traffic jams, “tranques”, as they say in Panama.

Happy Friday ! ☀️

Do you know the name of the musical instrument that appears in the picture ?

➡️ Tambor Pujador 🪘🇵🇦

The pujador drum consists of a hollow cylinder made of balsa wood, coconut palm, cedar, among others. Its height is 22 inches, the width is 5 1/2 inches, the sound of this is low or low and is a little above the knees of the drummer.

The Panamanian drum is an African heritage and before, it was used by Africans in spiritual rites. The artisans follow certain rituals, among them is that they are not made with just any wood and they are not cut at any time of the year. They also say that they are intoxicated with rum to make them sound better and even carved in closed places to avoid being watched.

Wooden wedges placed between the upper strings and inside the adjusting strings around the drum are used to tighten the leather and tune the drum. 🎶

Happy International Earth Day ! 🌍

“Planet against Plastic” is 2024’s theme. In fact, it aims to raise awareness of the dangerous and negative effects of plastic pollution on human and planetary health. ♻️

According to the UN, plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose, and has a direct impact on marine ecosystems. It pollutes soils and natural habitats, marine species and groundwater, preventing them from adapting to climate change.

For Cacao Travel, it’s a source of pride to be an official sponsor of the NGO and contribute to help the cause by recycling household plastic.

Keep up the fight against plastic ! Earth day Every day !🍃

“Building happiness with plastic waste is possible” ♻️❤️

We are very proud to be an official sponsor of the NGO for:
📍 Andrés Bello Park’s recycling station, Via Argentina, Panama. 🇵🇦

Its purpose is to build happiness by transforming plastic into raw material used in the manufacture of RPL (Recycled Plastic Lumber). This material is used for the construction of social works aimed at improving the quality of life in vulnerable communities.

An act of love to transform plastic waste issues into solutions for life ! 🌱

Here are the different steps to fill the bottle of love :
1 - Save your single or multiple use flexible plastic packaging (plastic bags, cream tubes, toothbrush...).
2 - Find a plastic bottle of any type, size or color (water, softener, detergent, juices, cosmetics...).
3 - Insert the plastic wrappings into the bottle and press with the help of a stick. A compact bottle allows you to carry more weight in less space and reduce your carbon footprint.
4 - Take the filled bottle to the nearest collection center. You can see the current collection points at the link: www.botellasdeamor.org

👉🏻 visit the page for more information 💡
..and... fill your bottles !

🌊 Sea turtle at Coiba Island 🐢

📍Coiba National Park 🐠
In 1992, Panama created Coiba National Park, encompassing over 1,042 square miles of islands, forests, beaches, mangroves and coral reefs, and in July 2005, Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site.

The park includes Coiba island, 38 smaller islands off the southwest coast of Panama, and the surrounding marine areas within the Gulf of Chiriquí providing protection for coral reefs, humpback whales, pilot whales, killer whales, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, marlins and other marine creatures.

Due to the Gulf of Chiriquí’s capacity to buffer against the effects of El Niño temperature swings, the marine ecosystems within Coiba National Park harbor a high degree of biodiversity. The park is home to 760 species of marine fishes, 33 species of sharks and 20 species of cetaceans. 🦈🐟🐋🐬

📍Plaza de Francia was erected between 1921 and 1922 during the presidency of Belisario Porras in what until then was the parade ground of the Chiriqui Barracks to commemorate the French canal enterprise led by Ferdinand de Lesseps and in honor of the French Republic. An obelisk of 18 meters high occupies the center of this square, at the top of it is the figure of the Gallic Rooster, symbol of France. Surrounding the obelisk are the busts of Ferdinand de Lesseps, Armand Reclus, Lucien Bonaparte Wyse, Leon Boyer and Pedro J. Sosa. We can also find in front of the obelisk a statue of Pablo Arosemena, 5th president of the Republic of Panama.
