Adventure Spotlight: Featured Tour of the Week, Birdwatching Soberanía National Park and Pipeline Road

Imagine seeing 113 bird species in just one day.

That’s exactly what happened on our recent birdwatching adventure in Soberanía National Park and Pipeline Road! Christian, Natalia, and our good friend and guest Luis Verdesoto explore one of Panama’s most biodiverse regions. The day was packed with incredible sightings, including:
🔹 Ocellated Antbird

The Elusive Streak-Chested Antpitta

We waited... and waited... then, behind the shadows of the rainforest, a flicker of movement. Suddenly, there it was—the Streak-Chested Antpitta, appearing like a shadow come to life!

Captured on our recent Soberanía National Park & Pipeline Road Birding Tour, our guide Natty spotted this incredible bird for guest Luis Verdesoto. This secretive antpitta is known for being one of the hardest birds to spot in the dense understory of Panama’s tropical rainforests.

The Hylopezus perspicillatus, or Streak-Chested Antpitta, is an insectivore that plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of its ecosystem. These birds are known for their distinctive, repetitive call and their behavior of "leaf tossing"—a fascinating technique where they flick aside leaves with their beak to uncover hidden insects. Their cryptic nature and preference for dense forest floors make them an elusive treasure for birdwatchers.

Sightings like this remind us of the hidden gems that thrive in the heart of the rainforest. Ready to experience the magic of Panama's biodiversity for yourself?

Bird of the Week: Meet Panama’s National Bird – The Harpy Eagle

Imagine soaring through the towering trees of Panama’s rainforest, with the Harpy Eagle flying alongside you, its powerful wings cutting through the mist. This bird of prey, one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world, relies on vast, undisturbed rainforests to hunt and nest.

Unfortunately, the Harpy Eagle faces growing challenges – habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and climate change. Yet, in Panama, hope is on the horizon. By involving local communities in its conservation, the Harpy Eagle is surviving. Communities that protect these forests not only preserve the eagle’s habitat but also find sustainable ways to thrive through ecotourism, creating lasting benefits for both people and wildlife.

You have the opportunity to be part of this journey. Come with Isthmian Adventures, and explore Panama’s hidden rainforests while directly supporting the people working to protect the Harpy Eagle and its home. Let’s create a legacy of conservation together.

Bird of the Week: The Rufous Piha – A Warning From the Rainforest

Did you know that the Rufous Piha, a beautiful bird with striking rufous feathers, could be telling us something much bigger than just its story? These birds aren’t just part of the wildlife tapestry—they are vital players in the health of the rainforest.

Found deep in Panama's tropical forests, the Rufous Piha helps disperse seeds that regenerate the rainforest. Its quiet presence and colorful plumage are beautiful, but their declining numbers are a sign of something far more alarming: the destruction of the very habitat they call home.

Human activity has led to the loss of forests where these birds thrive, and when they disappear, it’s a wake-up call. The reduction of the Rufous Piha’s presence signals weakening ecosystems, reminding us that the rainforest is fragile and in need of our protection.

But there’s hope! By choosing responsible travel and supporting eco-conscious operators like Isthmian Adventures, you can make a difference. Traveling mindfully ensures that these ecosystems are preserved for generations to come.

Bird of the Week: The Vibrant Crimson-collared Tanager

Imagine wearing your most colorful, eye-catching outfit every day—looking bold and beautiful, but also standing out to everyone around you. That's the life of the Crimson-collared Tanager. This bird, with its striking red and black feathers, gets noticed!

But there's more to the story. While bright plumage attracts mates and shows off a bird's health, it also makes the Crimson-collared Tanager more visible to potential predators. However, the lush forests of Panama offer this incredible species the perfect balance. Its colorful feathers are crucial for communication and attracting mates, yet the thick jungle canopy provides protection, allowing this magnificent bird to thrive.

For us, the benefit is clear—watching these stunning creatures in their natural habitat brings us closer to the wonders of nature. It's a reminder of the beauty and importance of preserving such vibrant wildlife for future generations.

Join us on a transformative adventure through Panama and discover the dazzling world of birds like the Crimson-collared Tanager. With Isthmian Adventures, every birdwatching tour is an opportunity to learn, explore, and connect with nature on a deeper level.

Some journeys bring you back to familiar places, but nature always finds a way to make it feel brand new. Two years after their first adventure with us, Elisabeth and Arnold returned for another Birdwatching Santa Fe day tour—proof that true explorers never stop seeking wonder.

This time, the usual bird count may have been lower, but the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Moments like watching a Red-capped Manakin above us, spotting the elusive Bronze Hermit, or admiring the iridescence of a Violet-headed Hummingbird building its nest remind us that nature always rewards those who embrace the details.

Beyond birds, their curiosity led them deeper—observing fluttering butterflies, intricate insects, and the rich tapestry of plant life that makes Santa Fe so special.

An Unforgettable Day in Santa Fe

6:00 AM sharp—binoculars in hand, field guide ready, cold water stocked, and coffee steaming. Santa Fe’s cloud-kissed forests whispered with the promise of discovery.

Without knowing it, our Day tour today included two very special guests, and perhaps the birds sensed it too. As if rolling out nature’s red carpet, the forest gifted us with breathtaking encounters—Crimson-collared Tanagers flashed through the canopy, Bay Wrens serenaded us from the underbrush, and a Sunbittern made an elegant appearance. Black-and-yellow, speckled, golden-hooded—each tanager painted the morning with colors only nature could compose.

Our guests, UK Ambassador to Panama, James Dauris, and his wife Helen stood as the perfect travelers—curious, calm, and captivated by the avian wonders unfolding before them. It wasn’t until we bid farewell at the end of the day that we learned who they were. Yet, in the realm of birdwatching, the shared wonder of nature remains.

Not the most birds we’ve ever seen, but certainly some of the most magical. Nature always rewards the patient and the keen-eyed observer.

Until next time, Santa Fe.
