History
Arequipa, known as the "White City" due to its colonial architecture of sillar, was founded on August 15, 1540. Strategically located on the high plateau, it has become an important commercial and cultural center, with indigenous and Hispanic influence. CHOQUEQUIRAO.
Known as the sacred sister of Machu Picchu, due to the similarity between both Inca sites. It is located 3,033 meters above sea level (masl). Due to its location, this Inca compound served as a checkpoint between the main Inca sites such as Pisac, Cusco and Machu Picchu. Considered one of the last bastions of resistance and refuge of the Incas. who, by orders of Manco Inca, abandoned the city of Cusco to take refuge in the cities of the Vilcabamba region, when Cusco was under siege by the Spanish. It was in this place and throughout the Vilcabamba valley where Manco and the other Incas of Vilcabamba resisted the attack of the Spanish, until the capture and execution of Túpac Amaru I in 1572. The Choquequirao complex is made up of nine sectors, among which which highlight the political-religious center, the system of fountains and canals with aqueducts, and the group of portals.
The only way to get to Choquequirao is by land. The main route is heading to the town of Cachora (2,903 meters above sea level), 3 or 4 hours by road from the city of Cusco. Then, the walking route begins to the archaeological site of Choquequirao. The route crosses important points such as Capuliyoc, Maranpata and Sunchupata. It is calculated from Cachora, 32 kilometers of walking, an average of 10 to 12 hours. Due to its height, Choquequirao enjoys a temperate climate. However, it should be noted that the road to Choquequirao is warm due to the Apurímac canyon. The environment of Choquequirao is one of the richest in biodiversity. All of these species have adapted despite temperature variations such as sun throughout the day and harsh frost at night. The fauna of the place is mainly composed of condors, tarucas, vizcachas, foxes, skunks, pumas, hummingbirds, bears and the cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird. Its flora includes giant ferns, ichu and a wide variety of orchids, including the wakanki variety.
