Exciting changes are coming to Machu Picchu starting June 1st, 2024! The iconic Inca citadel is set to introduce new visitor routes and increase its daily capacity to 5,600 guests during the high season.

BREAKING! A NEW SPECIES OF GREEN ANACONDA! 🐍 by @freekvonk
Today, together with 14 other scientists from nine countries, I described a NEW snake species from the Amazon. 🐍 And not just any one. A GIANT SNAKE! We have discovered that the largest snake species in the world, the green anaconda - as we all know it from the movies & from all the stories about giant snakes - is actually TWO different species! The green anacondas that occur in the north of their range in South America (including Venezuela, Suriname, and French Guiana) appear to belong to a completely DIFFERENT species! Although they look almost identical at first glance, the genetic difference between the two is 5.5%, and that is HUGE. 😱 To put this in perspective, humans and chimpanzees are only genetically different from each other by about 2%. We have given the new species the Latin name Eunectes akayima, the ‘northern green anaconda’. The word “akayima” comes from several indigenous languages of northern South America, and means “great snake.” You can see in the video the BIGGEST anaconda I have ever seen, as thick as a car tire, eight meters long and weighing over 200 kg - with a head as big as my head. Out of complete awe and admiration a ‘monster’! I have discovered a new species before, but that was a small snake from Australia. Now it’s about a mythical and legendary animal, one that I can fit in four times! Definitely one of the highlights of my scientific career. Also because this snake occurs in the Amazon, a place that feels like home to me. That’s why this feels double. Because no matter how exciting the discovery of this snake is, the Amazon region is under severe pressure from climate change and the continued deforestation of primary rainforest. Harpy Eagle 🦅
Here are some facts that will surprise you about one of the largest raptors in the Americas:
1️⃣ This bird is found in the sparsely inhabited rain forests of Central and South America. They prefer heights of 600 to 2000 meters above sea level and like to perch close to the ground for an easy hunt.
2️⃣ The coloration of its plumage has 3 primary colors (black, grey, and white) that exhibit a combination of shades and gradients. The tonalities are the same between males and females. Still, it does present a slight variation between young and adults where the intensity of the colors changes, being the adults darker and the young lighter.
3️⃣ Monogamous and with a lifespan of 35 to 45 years, a bonded pair may stay together for 25 to 30 years. Yeah, #couplegoals. Instead of migrating, they stay in one place and establish their territory, preferring areas with tall trees that provide enough food.
4️⃣ Harpy pairs reproduce every 2 or 3 years and lay 1 or 2 eggs. The brooding period is approximately 2 months, and the couple works together.
5️⃣ Females are larger than males. In her prime, an adult female Harpy Eagle can grab targets weighing up to 20 lbs in flight and carry them without landing.
The Harpy Eagle is not only the National Bird of Panama. It is also the emblem of the #Colombian Air Force, the Ecuadorian symbol of biodiversity, and could be found on the #Venezuelan 10 bolivares bills. Last but not least, the Harpy Eagle was the inspiration behind the design of ‘Fawkes,’ the Phoenix in the Harry Potter film series.
