An incredible display of skill and precision. Jaguars are the apex predators of the Pantanal, and their primary prey is the caiman. Two capybaras gracefully swim, embodying the serene beauty of their biodiverse haven. These gentle giants are the largest rodents on Earth, weighing up to 70 kilos/150 pounds. Social and peaceful by nature, they thrive in groups and are perfectly adapted to their watery home with their webbed feet, which make them exceptional swimmers.Water is essential for capybaras, offering food, shelter, and an escape from predators. However, their tranquil existence is not without challenges. Capybaras are a key prey species for jaguars, the apex predators of the region. These powerful cats pose a constant threat, but capybaras rely on their sharp instincts and group cooperation to survive. The Pantanal is a symbol of nature’s wonder, and the capybara is its peaceful ambassador.Captured on my safari expedition in the Pantanal, Brazil.
Jaguars are the only big cats uniquely adapted to hunt in water!Meet Ousado (pronounced Oo-sah-doh), an 8-year-old male jaguar with a love for swimming. He’s one of the strongest jaguars in the Pantanal and wears a radio collar to support vital research.Ousado's story is one of resilience. In 2020, he was rescued from devastating wildfires, suffering severe third-degree burns on all four paws. Thanks to dedicated treatment, he made a remarkable recovery and was successfully reintroduced to his natural habitat in the Pantanal wetlands.Captured on my safari expedition in the Pantanal, Brazil.
Jaguars are stalk-and-ambush predators, known for their unique hunting technique of killing prey by piercing the skull or neck with powerful canines. They possess the strongest bite relative to size among big cats. This jaguar was quietly approaching the shore of the river, getting closer to a capybara swimming near the opposite bank. Captured on my safari expedition in the Pantanal, Brazil.
Adventuring in this unique corner of the Amazon Rainforest is remarkable. The tanning-rich reflective waters of these rivers and lakes make them look like huge mirrors. The amount of wildlife is overwhelming. Aside from the huge variety of other animals and plants, we counted up to 6 sloths on this trip. We walked the forest, got immersed far and deep in this fragile jungle, fished for piranha, met the locals … it’s endless. In a remote area like this, the comforts of luxury cruising bring the thrill of the Amazon experience to the next level.
