Legend has it that the Sun God asked his son Manco Capac (the first Inca, about 1100 AD) that his twin sons could accompany him at sunset, so Manco Capac sent for his two sons but they were not found, then the Sun God sent for the nearest Apus (mountain gods) of this place to ask about what had happened, they replied that the twin sons were lost and that they did not stop crying until they finally flooded in their own tears; the son had become the Huaypo Lagoon and the daughter the Piuray Lagoon.

Cuenta la leyenda que el dios Sol pidió a su hijo Manco Capac (el primer Inca, aprox 1100 DC) que sus hijos mellizos puedan acompañarlo en la puesta del Sol u ocaso, fue así que el Manco Capac mandó a llamar a sus dos hijos pero no los encontraron, entonces el dios Sol mandó a llamar a los Apus(montañas dioses) más cercanos de este lugar para preguntar sobre lo que había ocurrido, ellos respondieron que los hijos mellizos se encontraban perdidos y que no paraban de llorar hasta que finalmente se inundaron en sus propias lágrimas; el hijo se había convertido en la laguna de Huaypo y la hija en la laguna de Piuray.
