The True Spirit of Christmas in Cusco
In Cusco, Christmas is a celebration where ancient Inca traditions blend seamlessly with Catholic customs, creating a unique and deeply rooted festive spirit. Despite the December rains, the city radiates joy and cultural richness.
The Andean people of Cusco create intricate nativity scenes, or "nacimientos," with pieces bought at the bustling Santurantikuy market on December 24th. These beautiful displays, symbolizing a fusion of Inca and Catholic heritage, remain until January 6th, honoring "La Bajada de los Reyes."
Christmas Eve, known as "Noche Buena," brings families together to share meals and exchange gifts. While some enjoy turkey, others make do with chicken. The beloved "panetón" (a fruit-filled cake) and hot chocolate add warmth and delight to the celebrations.
A heartwarming tradition in Cusco is the "chocolatadas." In the week before Christmas, communities unite to offer hot chocolate and small gifts to less fortunate children. These acts of kindness and unity truly embody the spirit of Christmas in Cusco, making it a celebration of warmth, generosity, and cultural heritage. #MachuPicchu #cuscoperu #travelblogger #christmas2024 #peru #travelphotography #Cusco #traditions #foodphotography #foodlover

The true spirit of Christmas in Cusco
December even though it's rain season in southern Perú and Celebrating the same holiday perhaps almost world wide but in a multitude of different ways. The Andean people (Perú) it's a fusión from our Inka ancestors festivity and Catholic church put together Nativity scenes in churches and homes, most families buy the pieces for their nativity scenes at the fascinating market of Santurantikuy (the buying of the saints), held in the Main square on the 24th december. They will keep their nativity scenes until the until la Bajada de los Reyes (the arrival of the three wise men) on January 6th. In Cusco, Christmas Eve (known as Noche Buena) is when families get together and celebrate and exchange gifts. Well off families; eat turkey, while for many others chicken suffices. Paneton (a cake/bread filled with fruits) is very popular as are hot drinks of chocolate. In the week preceding Christmas, it is also popular for communities, churches or organisations to organise "chocolatadas" where people who are better off make a Christmas gesture to poor children by offering them a cup of hot chocolate and perhaps a small gift. The long lines for chocolatadas are a poignant reminder of the community's spirit and generosity during the festive season.
In Cusco, the true spirit of Christmas is reflected in the warmth, unity, and generosity of its people, creating a celebration that is both unique and deeply rooted in cultural traditions. #christmas2024 #MachuPicchu #Cusco #peru #travelphotography
