▪︎ ¿ALGUNA VEZ SE HAN PREGUNTADO DÓNDE ESTÁN LAS MOMIAS DE LOS GOBERNANTES INCA?

Con la llegada de los españoles, algunos criados fieles se llevaron las momias de sus monarcas a algún lugar seguro para que no pudiesen ser profanadas, y allí siguieron siendo veneradas en secreto. En 1558, Juan Polo de Ondegardo fue nombrado corregidor de Cuzco y entre sus objetivos estaba localizar las momias de los reyes incas. Tuvo éxito en su búsqueda, ya que descubrió las momias de varios gobernantes y sus coyas (reinas).

El corregidor las reunió todas en su casa y allí las pudo ver el cronista Garcilaso de la Vega, que narra así el encuentro: "En la habitación encontré cinco cuerpos de los gobernantes incas, tres varones y dos hembras. Los cuerpos estaban perfectamente conservados [...]. Estaban vestidos como lo habían sido en vida. Fueron enterrados en una posición sentada, sus manos cruzadas a través de su pecho, la izquierda sobre la derecha, y sus ojos bajos, como si buscaran en el suelo [...]. Los cuerpos pesaban tan poco que cualquier indio podría llevarlos en sus brazos en la espalda de casa en casa".

El día que se fraguó el fin del Imperio inca
Un 16 de noviembre de 1532, los conquistadores españoles del Perú concertaron una reunión con Atahualpa, el último soberano inca. Tras esta visita, los cuerpos fueron enviados a Lima, y el virrey Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza mandó conservarlos en el recinto del Hospital Real de San Andrés, donde el jesuita José de Acosta pudo verlas y describirlas. A partir de ese momento existen muy pocas menciones sobre estos cuerpos; la última data de 1638. Siglos después, en 1937, José de la Riva-Agüero dirigió una investigación para saber si, efectivamente, las momias seguían en el hospital o qué había sido de ellas. Se descubrieron varias criptas, pero en ninguna de ellas había momias.

En 2001, otra expedición arqueológica intentó dar con el paradero de las esquivas momias. Empleando un radar de penetración terrestre hallaron una cripta subterránea abovedada bajo el hospital y un pozo con basura de época colonial. En 2005 se excavó en estos lugares, pero no se halló ni rastro de momias. ¿Estuvieron enterradas aquí las momias reales incas? ¿Fueron trasladadas en algún momento a otra ubicación? ¿Continúan ocultas en algún rincón del hospital? Por ahora estas preguntas permanecen sin respuesta y el destino de las momias de los grandes gobernantes incas continúa siendo un enigma.

Chankillo es hasta la fecha "el observatorio astronómico más antiguo del mundo"

El Complejo Astronómico Chankillo fue inscrito en la Lista Indicativa del Patrimonio Mundial de la Convención de UNESCO de 1972 como bien cultural en el año 2013. Es un centro ceremonial único y excepcional con más de 2300 años de antigüedad, conformado por 13 torres, un templo circular y una plaza construidos con piedra y barro. Representa el ejemplo más antiguo en las Américas de un monumento dedicado a la observación del movimiento solar y la medición del tiempo.
