Birding the coastal wetlands with this lovely family of Peruvian Thick-knees (Burhinus superciliaris) Alcaraván Huerequeque. A largely nocturnal wader, characterised by large eyes, a broad head and a stout bill. The long legs have an enlarged Knee joint that gives them their name. Active mostly at night but alert in daylight, they are fast runners that feed on animal food lizards to small invertebrates. The female does most of the incubation and the male standing sentinel in the shade at a short distanse. There are nine species in the world, one in Peru!!!

Birding the High Andes with this peruvian endemic Tit-like Dacnis (Xenodacnis parina) Azulito Altoandino. Occurs in pairs or small groups, feeding primarily by gleaning from underside of leaves, especially those of Gynoxys shrubs, from which they obtain aphids and their sugary secretions. New Split HBW & BirdLife International 2020. This lovely Dacnis was photographed in Qenteqentiyoc valley, nearby Cusco city!!!

Birding & Monkey watching in the neotropics. Peru with 54 monkey species, which 9 are endemics. A lovely family Black-headed Night Monkey (Aotus nigriceps) Musmuqui/Mono nocturno de cabeza negra. Feeding on fruits, nectar, young leaves and buds, insects, and spiders. Breeding season occurs between August and February during the rainy season, when the fruit is abundant. Classified as Least Consern on the The IUCN Red List. Although the Black-headed Night Monkey is not generally hunted for food, considerable numbers of them were captured and exported to biomedical research laboratories in the 1970s because of their use in research on malaria and in oncology. These beauties were photographed in Cacao Center - Puerto Maldonado!!!

Birding southeastern Peru with these stunning Purus Jacamars (Galbalcyrhynchus purusianus) Jacamar del Purús. They perch with the bill pointing slightly upwards, here they wait for some insects to fly by and dart out acrobatically, snap it up and return to the same lookout. Jacamars sally gracefully after flying insects (butterflies, bees, wasps, etc); bee and wasp stingers are removed before the insect is swallowed. Most Jacamar species nest in burrows dug into banks, a few using arboreal termiitaries or old wasp nests!!!

Emperor Tamarins (Saguinus imperator) Tamarín Emperador are visiting the banana feeders in Manu Birding Lodge. Emperor Tamarins are often associated in mixed troops with Goeldi's Monkeys and Weddell's Saddle-back Tamarins feeding on fruit, insects, and in the dry season flower nectar. The face is dominated by long downcurling white mustaches which resemble of an old chinise emperor. Eleven species of monkeys are found in Manu Birding Lodge with a pristine and terra firme forest!!!

Adaptations for camouflage. The wondrously crypic plumage of the adult Andean Potoo (Nyctibius maculosus) Nictibio Andino, combines perfectly with its erect, dead branch posture a predator avoidance behavior. This species has also evolved two small notches in its eyelids, an adaptation that permits it to glimpse its daytime surroundings without revealing it huge, night adapted eyes.
