El primero es la proyección de imágenes con cámara oscura, el segundo es el descubrimiento de que algunas sustancias se alteran visiblemente con la exposición a la luz. No hay artefactos ni descripciones que indiquen ningún intento de capturar imágenes con materiales sensibles a la luz antes del siglo XVIII.

Alrededor de 1717, Johann Heinrich Schulze utilizó una suspensión sensible a la luz para capturar imágenes de letras recortadas en una botella. Sin embargo, no intentó que estos resultados fueran permanentes. Alrededor de 1800, Thomas Wedgwood hizo el primer intento documentado de manera confiable, aunque infructuoso, de capturar imágenes con cámara en forma permanente. Sus experimentos produjeron fotogramas detallados, pero Wedgwood y su socio Humphry Davy no encontraron la manera de arreglar estas imágenes.
