Dancing on the Cementary
The 1st and 2nd of November, Cusco celebrates one of the oldest traditions past down from generation to generation: Dia de todos los Santos y Dia de los Muertos (All Saints Day and All Souls Day). During these days, Peruvian families attended Mass and gather together in their homes and on cemeteries sharing memories with a bite to eat and a drink. Instead of a sad occasion, the Peruvians create a joyful event, praying and honoring the living and the death. One of the many traditions is to clean the altars on the cemeteries of the lost loved ones and decorate with fresh flowers, candles, photos and a piece of what used to be their favorite food with a bottle of beer. At home, parents give to their children a “Tantawawa” as a present, a sweet bread in shape of a baby doll for girls or horse for boys.
