Dear club members,

The South American Explorers is temporarily closing its clubhouses in Lima
and Cusco for this year, while we do some re-engineering.

Unfortunately, this also means that we will no longer be able to offer storage facilities. This is understandably inconvenient for you, but we have no other options at this time.

Some of you have belongings stored at the Lima(Cusco) clubhouse.

If you are not in Peru, do you have someone in Lima or Cusco or elsewhere in the country who could store this luggage for you? We will be happy to send the luggage to that person if you cover the cost of transport.

For storage left in Lima, our final deadline for closing the service is March 15th. If you cannot pick up or arrange for alternative storage by then, there are two options: a private storage facility that charges a fee of $10 per bag per month; or we will donate the luggage to the local non-profit equivalent of Goodwill Industries.
For storage left in Cusco, please contact Matt Waugh on the SAE Cusco page as soon as possible. Thanks!

This article quotes an official from Peru’s National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) saying the road up to Machu Picchu could collapse after another year and a half.

The official says Consettur Machupicchu S.A.C., the consortium that holds monopolistic control of bus transport to Machu Picchu isn't doing its job maintaining the road.

The Hiram Bingham Highway to Machu Picchu, built in 1948, could have only a year and five months of "useful life" left, official says.

SOUTH AMERICAN EXPLORERS - Monday night Lecture
Carlos Velaochaga - Inka Religion

The fact that Spain was, finally, winning the war against the moors established, according to popular beliefs that overcome all other religions and even decided to expel the Jewish population that refused to be baptised. With this ethnocentric idea, the Spanish were scarcely interested in the Native American religions. Recent investigations show that many Inca rituals have survived and reading the chronicles of the Jesuit priests regarding the extirpation of idolatries we can reconstruct the Inca beliefs, with the help of our present knowledge about far eastern religions. The lecture will show the rituals performed in the Inca world today.
Carlos Velaochega is a reknowned Peruvian anthropologist. Trained in Business Administration and Economics to inherit the family business, developed an interest towards cultural issues at an early age. Uninterested in family business, specialized in tourism and hotel administration which allowed for extensive travel and interaction with different people of the world especially with the native Indians of Peru. Carlos developed tourism in the Andean areas. Impressed by the ethnic differences, returned to the University, at age 35, and self-financed studies of Social Science specializing in cultural anthropology and did abundant field work in folk religions. Back in tourism for income, led cultural oriented tours since teaching is a poorly paid job in Peru and continued self-financed research into Latin American social conflicts and cultural development. Weekly editorial articles appear in Peru´s second largest newspaper since 1988 on these subjects to awaken cultural awareness in Peru. Has accepted teaching assignments from 1990 to this day.
