We hiked the short Inka Trail hike with Silke & Daniel, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! The incredible views of the mountains and ancient Inka ruins left us in awe. HIKING TIPS FOR HIKING IN PERU IN WINTER 2024

Hiking in the Andes in winter can be an incredible experience, but being well-prepared for the conditions is essential. Here are some tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip:

Provisions for Camping

Provided by the Tour Company:
• Tents: Most tour companies provide tents that are suitable for the conditions.
• Sleeping Bags: Check if they provide high-quality, cold-weather sleeping bags. If not, consider bringing or renting one.
• Meals: During the hike, most lunches, Dinners, and Breakfasts are included; verify what exactly. Dietary meals can be provided; advise the travel agency in advance!
• Guides and Staff: Professional guides and local support.
Provisions to Buy:
• High-quality Backpack: For multi-day treks in the Andes, choose a durable, comfortable backpack with 50-70 liters capacity. Key features include multiple compartments, adjustable straps, a ventilated back panel, and robust zippers. Ensure hydration compatibility and consider brands like Osprey, Deuter, Gregory, and REI for optimal performance.
• Additional Snacks: High-energy snacks like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars.
• Water Bottles or Hydration System: Ensure you have a way to carry 1 ½ to 2 liters of water per day.
• Headlamp or Flashlight: Extra batteries are also recommended.
• Trekking Poles: These help with balance and reduce strain on your legs. You can hiker them in Cusco.
• Personal First Aid Kit: Include basic first aid supplies and personal medications.
• Personal Toiletries and Biodegradable Soap: For personal hygiene during the hike.
Storage of Luggage
While hiking, you can store your luggage in your hotel or our office in Cusco. So, bring an extra duffle bag for it.
Weather and Clothing
Weather Conditions:
• Temperature: In winter (June to August), temperatures in the Andes can drop significantly, especially at night. Daytime temperatures can range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), but nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, sometimes as low as -5°C to -10°C (23°F to 14°F).
• Rain and Snow (now it is raining a bit!!): While it’s the dry season, be prepared for occasional rain or snow at higher elevations.
Clothing:
• Sweaters and Fleece: Good for layering and keeping warm during the day.
• Rain Gear: It is essential to stay dry in case of unexpected rain; light rain ponchos can be a good solution.
• Warm Jacket: A good quality, insulated jacket is crucial for cold nights and early mornings. Fleece alone might not be sufficient.
• Thermal Underwear: Adds an extra layer of warmth.
• Hat and Gloves: Essential for cold weather.
• Sturdy Hiking Boots: Ensure they are well broken in to avoid blisters.

From May to August, prepare for cold weather by bringing a warm jacket, sweater, rain gear, and fleece. Ensure you have all the necessary provisions.
Being well-prepared will help you enjoy your hike through the beautiful but challenging terrain of the Andes.

📣 Conocimientos, habilidades y rituales asociados a la renovación anual del puente Q’eswachaka
Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad
📆 Del 08 al 11 de junio
📌 Distrito de Quehue, provincia de Canas. Cusco
👉 Las comunidades de Choccayhua, Ccollana Quehue, Chaupibanda y Huinchiri te esperan para celebrar el ritual de renovación del puente Qeswachaka.
El Q’eswachaka aglutina diversas manifestaciones culturales de estos pueblos, entre ellas, tecnologías de construcción, sistemas de organización tradicional, música y danza, espacios sagrados de representación y ritualidad.

La continuidad del ritual de renovación del puente Q’eswachaka tiene lugar gracias a la labor de transmisión de los saberes y prácticas que llevan a cabo sus comunidades portadoras, quienes le confieren un valor simbólico e histórico al proceso de renovación y al puente mismo.

🔴En tu visita, tomar en cuenta lo siguiente:
El ritual de renovación posee formas organizativas que es necesario respetar
El acceso vehicular estará restringido durante las labores comunales
Los miradores tienen un aforo limitado y estarán resguardados por personal del Ministerio de Cultura y de la Municipalidad Distrital de Quehue.
