“Since coming back from the trip, I have realized how the Peru trip has opened my understanding of South American culture. It has broadened my cultural perspective in this way. It has also allowed me to become more proficient in my Spanish skills in class. I am able to bring everything that I learned in Peru to the classroom and give an additional perspective. I walked away from the trip with a new confidence in my Spanish speaking abilities as well! I think it is cool that whenever I meet people from Peru now, I have an instant connection because of my understanding of their background and culture, which is only attributed to the trip to Peru!”

“The trip to Perú was my first authentic experience in a Spanish speaking country. I had been to Puerto Rico before, but there is a lot of English spoken there and this was before I started studying Spanish again more intensely. Therefore, Perú provided me with an amazing and authentic space to talk with people from many different walks of life. My mornings in Lima would start with a nice conversation over breakfast with my host mother. We would talk about any and everything for about 30 minutes, and the same thing at night for about an hour. This was a fantastic daily practice routine. Then, going to our classes that were taught in Spanish provided even more immersion in the language. There’s something “twice as interesting” about learning new information in a second language. By far, Perú was my most immersive experience related to Spanish. Being surrounded in the language really got me used to hearing it, which in turn made me more comfortable listening and responding. And we all know that confidence is a big part of language. I am eternally grateful for the experience and all of the historical and cultural information has inspired me to pursue a master’s degree in Spanish after I graduate with my bachelor’s degree. I give credit to the Peru trip with for my inspiration 100%”

Have you ever wondered what does the space where the Coastal Deserts meet the Andean foothills in South America look like?
In Cañete, a couple hours South of Lima, eolic sands stretch their fingers East toward the Andes like a natural version of the Creation of Adam in Sistine Chapel…
At Trek and Travel we are always in awe of Peruvian geography and the variety it fosters. It’s just incredible to think that our planet has 104 types of ecosystems and Peru has 84 of them. That's almost 80% of all ecosystems in the world! This included Perú in the list of the 12 countries with the most ecosystems on Earth, a real privilege.

Love travels!!
You throw it out into the world, and one day it comes back to you like a magic boomerang…
In late November, part of our team travelled to the NCSU Campus in Raleigh, where we celebrated 20 years of an ongoing relationship with NCSU through the Spanish Language & Peruvian Culture Program Trek and Travel operates and hosts in Perú.
While in Raleigh, Fernanda -Trek and Travel’s amazing Hospitality Ambassador- met with some of the NCSU students who were part of our experience in Perú early that year... She had her wish come true when Josh Strickland and Melissa Hernandez drove her for a day at roller coaster park!!
Thank you so much Josh and Melissa!

Coastal Gardens of the Peruvian Central Coast
The shapes, the colors, the repetition, the smell…
The patterns, the textures, the mechanisms, the adaptation...
On high tide, on low tide,
So much hides and is then revealed, so much exists as one thing and then comes to life as a whole other thing!
A lesson on rhythm, color, balance, life cycles, trophic cascades…
So much in such a small world of a bunch o’ rocks!!
Such complexity and simplicity jamming, jazzing together….!! .
Such ambiguity.
Such beauty. .

"For millennia, humanity has intervened in the places where it has settled, adapting them to their survival and exploitation, reconfiguring what we perceive today as landscape, which is nothing but nature + culture. But also, giving that landscape a thick layer of meaning, content and very deep references. A bee, a fox, a hawk, has a territory.... Humanity instead, what it has is a landscape".

“Belief is a conscious act that charges the world with meaning…”
When did Belief start? Since when do we Believe? How and when did we start charging our actions with the intention and emotion that had them evolve into rites with meaning?
Ancient Andean people used the concept of “raise or tame” (criar). Raising/taming for them meant "creating a bond with…” And so they did. They created very special bonds with their land, their crops, their animals, the water, the climate, the cosmos. This bond is beautifully described by Exupéry when the Little Prince meets the fox:
"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I cannot play with you, I am not tamed.” The fox said. "What does that mean−− 'tame’?” "It is an act too often neglected, It means to establish ties. To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world… Do you see the grain−fields? I do not eat bread. But you have hair that is the color of gold. The grain, which is also golden, will bring back the thought of you. One only understands the things that one tames. Men have no more time to understand anything.” The next day the little prince came back. "It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock, then at three I shall begin to be happy... One must observe the proper rites, they are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours.”

"Pachacamac was the main Sanctuary of the Andean coast for more than 1,500 years. It was a sacred city inhabited by priests devoted to the worship of the Pachacamac god, whose power and prestige was respected by the rulers of Tawantinsuyu.
Located in the Lurín valley, pilgrims from different areas came to this place asking for advice and omens. Local and foreign populations arrived at the sanctuary’s doors to render devotion and tribute in magnificent ceremonies”
Can you imagine a sacred space which stayed relevant for over 1500 years??!! What was it like to come here? How many people congregated? How was this organized and administered? At Trek and Travel we are ever curious and always learning more about our millenary history so we can then share it with you.

The United Nations declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages
Preserving Indigenous Languages means preserving the way in which people talk about their "piece of universe" in the same language that was created from within it, to best describe, honor and communicate it!!! WOW!!!
Language and landscape, landscape and language … have braided their way in time telling the story of how people raised and were raised by their land.
At Trek and Travel we deeply believe there is a possible future at the intersection of modern technology and ancestral knowledge, language being a huge part of this body of knowledge.
Come and explore this, and many other modern challenges with us!!! Be it a personal, family, group or educational travel experience you’re after, we have the experience and passion to help you go from ideas to travel creatively, simply and on budget.
Give us a call, DM or email us. We’re excited to get to know you and shape your dream experience together.

In the beginning, space and time were born together, milliseconds after the Big Bang.
Since then, they’ve worked together as one: space-time. Always complimentary, always co-dependant, always a duo.
Partners in crime orchestrating what we perceive as reality.
Space is the container of time, it is the canvas in which time can manifest, becomes visible, exists…
Without space, time can’t manifest (think of how the seasons mark the passing of every year… ) and without time, space is there, inert.
Ancient Andean civilizations always depicted space-time as one cyclical entity, responsible for everything there was.
“PACHA” was the term used to talk about, space, time and also about mother earth.
At Trek and Travel we are always amazed at how much these ancient civilizations knew and internalized about our origins.
And about how If we want to know about humanity, we need to figure out the whole universe.

Today, August the 1st, we celebrate National Alpaca Day in Perú.
Alpacas have walked beside the Andean people since the beginning of civilization.
Back when humans danced the dance with their territory and their landscape, Alpacas were always a part of our seasonal rhythm.
These animals have the smell of time and a special andean sweetness one can pick up from the Quechua language.
Alpacas are a practical and symbolic presence in different ancient rites.
Coastal Lomas and highland wetlands, the most fragile of our ecosystems compression-wise, were lightly accupunctured by the special shape and size of their delicate paws.

We are humbled by such a magnificent animal who has offered us their meat, their milk and the softest of fibers.
Today we celebrate millennia of uninterrupted breeding tradition passed from generation to generation.
Today we celebrate every Alpaca breeder from 17 Peruvian Regions.
Today we celebrate Alpacas and their magic bond with Peruvian landscape and people. @ Peru

"What has happened to the calendar of the ancients? Walls and roads that have guided the view of generations towards the distant horizon to observe the celestial phenomena. We can still make the same observations that have been made in antiquity and verify how the sunset, when reaching its southern end, is marked with large and unequivocal signs in the old buildings. The sun is hidden at the end of an old road or wall, or between two pillars. In these days of Christmas, which for the ancients have been the occasion of great celebrations, it is worth remembering the steps of the astronomers of Pachacamac and making an observation that has been made there, probably every year, in hundreds of generations “.
María Reiche - for an article in El Comercio Newspaper in December 1947
During the weekend we were happy to visit Pachacamac with a group of students from Purdue University, who are visiting Perú as members of the (Experimental Aircraft Association), one of Trek and Travel’s global partners.

As part of this system we experienced its rhythms, its pulses, its flows... and we recognized all the elements, the roles they had and the tensions between them... It wasn't just the physical demands or the promise of new knowledge.
There was also something more trascendental.
Whenever he stood on a summit or a high ridge,
he felt so moved by the scenery that his imagination carried him even higher. This imagination, he said, soothed the deep wounds that pure reason sometimes created." 🙌🏻⛰✨

Textiles where the first Andean canvas. Before pottery or architecture, textiles begin to “contain” all the knowledge and cosmogony of the time, let’s remember they had no formal written language we know of... so their textiles were that first space where everything was synthesized. Over 470 years ago, grapes where introduced by the Spaniards in the Ica valley, where the dry, warm conditions make it perfect for certain varieties of wine and table grapes. It is such an experience to be able to taste what the land produces while walking along the very same fields where these grapes grow. Land, tradition and flavor... Taste so much better together!!!
