LEAVE NO TRACE
Story: "Footprints on the Snow"
Aline Mineiro from Brazil, known for her authenticity, commitment to the environment, and love for animals, embarked on a new mission: the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. Renowned for its snow-capped peaks and unique biodiversity, this region faced growing threats from irresponsible tourism and climate change. Aline knew her role as an influencer had to go beyond perfect photos; her true impact lay in inspiring real and sustainable change.

From the moment she arrived in Huaraz, the base city for exploring the Cordillera Blanca, Aline began working with local communities and conservation organizations led by a renowned mountain guide. Every day was a new opportunity to learn and teach. She shared "Leave no trace" tips on her social media, demonstrating how small actions could protect that natural paradise. Aline firmly believed that being a good influencer meant being honest and authentic, not fabricating situations to gain followers.

One day, while ascending towards the summit of the Cordillera Blanca over 5200 msnm, Aline encountered pieces of trash along the trail. Instead of leaving them, she picked them up with her mountain guide, understanding that each piece of litter could harm the fragile ecosystem. Unbeknownst to her, a group of tourists was watching. Unconsciously, she showed how to collect the waste and carry it back to the city for proper disposal. Moved by her sincerity and knowledge, the tourists joined her in an impromptu cleanup campaign. This gesture, captured in the minds and hearts of those present, sparked a viral chain reaction, touching millions around the world.

During her stay, Aline also focused on the relationship between humans and animals. In the villages near the mountains, dogs were loyal companions, but many lived in difficult conditions. Alongside Ana, a local veterinarian, Aline organized mobile clinics to provide free medical care to these animals. She rescued an injured puppy they found on one of their hikes and named him "Nevado." Nevado became her faithful companion and the symbol of her campaign, appearing in many of her posts and winning the affection of her followers. They continued searching for an adopter for this approximately three-month-old puppy.

Aline's authenticity resonated with people. It wasn't about showing only the beautiful moments, but being transparent about the challenges and hard work involved in climbing the mountain's peaks and caring for nature. Unlike many influencers who staged perfect scenarios, Aline shared her real journey, with its highs and lows, joys and tears, inspiring others to follow her example.

Epilogue:
At the end of her stay in the Cordillera Blanca, shortly before leaving Huaraz city, Aline gathered with locals, tourists, and volunteers to celebrate their achievements and renew their commitment to protecting the mountains. In her speech, Aline emphasized the importance of not leaving a trace and being authentic in every action. "Our impact is not measured by likes, but by the TRASH we don't leave," she said with emotion.

Aline left the Cordillera Blanca with a full heart, knowing her work had made a difference. With Nevado in her heart, she continued her journey, more committed than ever to using her influence for the good of the planet and all its inhabitants.

The Ascent to Mt. Ishinca Summit, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Our journey to the summit of Mt. Ishinca began in the early hours of the morning, under a blanket of stars that slowly gave way to the soft hues of dawn. The trail wound through rugged terrain, with the towering peaks of the Cordillera Blanca serving as our constant companions.

As we ascended, the landscape transformed from verdant alpine meadows to stark, snow-covered slopes. The air grew thinner and each step required more effort, but the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings kept us motivated. Glacial streams and ice formations created a surreal, almost otherworldly environment.

Upon reaching the summit, at an elevation of 5,530 meters (18,143 feet), we were greeted with a panoramic view that defies description. The silence was profound, broken only by the gentle whisper of the wind.

Nothwest Ridge (Normal Route)

Tocllaraju is one og the most beautiful mountains in the range. It is a challnging peak. Yet not too difficult for a first 6,000m peack. Adventurous yet moderate ice climbing, and an exposed ridge lead to a perfect Summit. This classic two-day mountaneering adventure is not to be missed.

First Ascent: July 31, 1939, by W. Brecht, H. Schweizer.

Elevation Gain: 1,632m from Ishinca base camp (Refugio). 1,32 from high camp.

Grade: D (Due to the difficulties of the Summit pyramid)

Time: 4 days roundtrip from Huaraz city; 7 – 9 hours from high camp to Summit.

Equipment: Crampons, 02 technical ice axes, 02 60m ropes, 03 ice crews and 4 snow pickets.

BELAYING ON SNOW - USING THE HIP BELAY. When ascending on snow, climbers give quicker and less formal belays using an ice axe, or they set up belays using established snow anchors. No matter what the belaying technique, every snow belay should be as secure and dynamic as possible to help limit the force on the anchor. The hip belay can provide a more gradual, dynamic belay than a belay using a belay device, but it takes more practice to execute correctly (see my next post all about HIP BELAYING). Plan your stance so your body takes the force, which is dissipated as much as possible by the belay. The dynamic, shock-absorbing quality of climbing rope also helps to minimize chances of an abrupt stop to a fall. Set up a belay close to the climbing difficulties. To belay the lead climber, get out of the line of fire by setting up the belay stance to one side of the fall line. If the leader is heading up on a diagonal, get outside any point where that climber's route can cross directly above you. On a ridge crest, it is not always possible to predict a fall line and plan a belay in advance. If a rope mate slips off one side of the ridge, the best tactic may actually be to jump off the opposite side, with the rope running over the ridge and thus saving both climbers. Climbing in snow is fundamental to mountaineering. Snow is magical stuff, cluaking the landscape in a sparkling mantle. Gently falling snowflakes can be a balm to the human spirit, an aesthetic delight. But technically, snow is rather dryly defined as "'a consolidated mass of water crystals." It is the degree of consolidation that is significant to the climber.
