HUALCACOCHA LAKE / ULTA VALLEY
Moderate to Hard Hike
We will depart Huaraz at 07:00am and drive from Huaraz following the Santa River along the Callejon de Huaylas up to the town of Carhuaz, from where we turn towards the mountains and keep driving on the east side of the valley passing through the villages of Shilla, Llipta, and Catay. During our drive to starting point of our hike we will be looking directly at the giant Huascaran Mountain.
After registering at the Huascaran National Park check point in the Ulta Valley we drive for about 15 minutes to where our hike begins.
We walk for about 15 minutes on a flat valley, then cross the bridge and start on a climbing zigzag path that ascends parallel to the river that comes down from Laguna Hualcacocha. Later we will walk through ancient quenual forests, where we often see many alpine flowers and wild mushrooms typical of the area. The hike to lake Hualcacocha will take us approximately 3.5 hours. The lake is located just below of Hualcan North peak (5300m) and the impressive Ulta Mountain (5440 meters). After spending time enjoying the lake scenery and eating our box lunch, we will descend by the same route; the way back will take us 2 hours approx to the road and the waiting minivan
Hike starts at 3800m (road in Ulta Valley)
Altitude at Lake = 4355m
