Quelucas is a small village nestled in the mountainous La Jalca region of the North Peruvian amazon, a lush area home to an immense d
iversity of flora and fauna and rich in traditions and folklore. The local secondary school is home to 20 students and an innovative weaving project, where over the past four years the school’s director, Riquelme Chuquital Montoya, has been motivating the women of the community to pass down these rapidly disappearing traditions to their children in the hope of reintroducing a sense of identity and self-esteem into the community. Like much of South America, this part of the world has undergone immense changes over the last decade and the cultures that give this área it’s unique carácter and history are subsiding due to the encroachment of modern life. Tourism has dramatically entered the scene but unfortunately is focused away from communities and the villagers look on as dozens of agency bus pass by in the valley below, ferrying hundreds of tourists to long-defined tourist sites. This región is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing tourist draws in South America and Quelucas is positioning itself as a model for a new kind of tourism that is greatly needed to help aleviate poverty. Through much energy and devotion this social effort has extended outwards into an award winning endeavour that has been slowly cultivated into a community business that allows a small yet steady income to motivate the artisans. Under the guidance of the director and with outside help the village is slowly opening itself up to sustainable homestay tourism where visitors can learn how to weave, live with the families, explore the endless mountains ans countryside, and in 2018 will be able visit the newly constructed cultural centre, built by the community members. The products are now for sale with each item lovingly made and often taking weeks to complete, unique in it's appearance and process. The dyes and materials are locally sourced and 100% organic. Every purchase goes directly towards a family in need. Every visit to Quelucas is an opportunity to experience daily life in the embrace of a welcoming community set against an immense backdrop. Each family devotes an immense amount of time and hope into their work, seeking opportunity and income for their children in a world where agriculture and hard labour provide the only real opportunities. Quelucas es un pequeño pueblo que se abriga en la región montañosa de La Jalca, en el norte de la Amazonía peruana, una zona exuberante que alberga una inmensa diversidad de flora y fauna, también abundante en tradiciones y folclore. La escuela primeria es hogar de 20 estudiantes con un innovador proyecto de tejido. En los últimos cuatro años el director de la escuela, Riquelme Chuquital Montoya, ha motivado a las mujeres de la comunidad a transmitir estas valiosas tradiciones que están desapareciendo rápidamente. Enseñan sus hijos con la esperanza de reintroducir un sentido de identidad y autoestima en la comunidad. Este parte del mundo ha experimentado cambios inmensos durante la última década y las culturas que le dan a esta área su carácter e historia están desapareciendo debido a la invasión de la vida moderna. Los jóvenes miembros se sienten atraídos cada vez más a las ciudades para buscar empleo, ya que la vida agrícola es insuficiente para mantener a las familias. El turismo ha entrado drasticamente en escena, pero desafortunadamente se ha alejado de las comunidades y los lugareños observan cómo decenas de autobuses de agencias pasan por el valle, transportando una multitud de visitantes a sitios turísticos predefinidos. Esta región está convirtiendose en uno de los lugares turísticos con el mayor crecimiento en América del Sur y Quelucas está posicionando como un modelo para un nuevo tipo de turismo que es muy necesario para ayudar a aliviar la pobreza. A través de mucha energía y devoción, este impulso social se ha extendido hacia un esfuerzo premiado que lentamente se ha cultivado en un negocio comunitario que permite un ingreso pequeño pero estable para motivar a las artesanas. Bajo la guía del director y con ayuda externa, la aldea se está abriendo lentamente al turismo vivencial sostenible, donde los visitantes pueden aprender a tejer, vivir con las familias, explorar las interminables montañas y el campo. Además en el 2018 podrán visitar el nuevo centro cultural, construido por los mismos miembros de la comunidad. Los productos están actualmente en venta, con cada artículo hecho con amor requiriendo semanas para completarlo, siendo único en su aspecto y proceso. Los tintes y materiales son propio del lugar y 100% orgánicos. Cada compra va directamente a una familia necesitada. Cada visita a Quelucas es una oportunidad para experimentar la vida diaria en el abrazo de una comunidad acogedora en un escenario incomparable.
