Last day in the Amazon: after having touched the leaves, felt the humid air on our skin, having woken up by the sound of the howler monkeys, watched the sun set on the river, admired the abundant wildlife, the big blue butterflies and flashflights of the most colorful macaws and parrots, after having learned so much, becoming a tiny bit more mindful for our surroundings, having shared this beautiful experience as a family and with new friends. The goodbyes to our wonderful nature guide Timo from were touching, the kids wanted to take him home, but we promised to come back to visit our Amazon friends and we will carry this beautiful experience forever in our hearts.

Day 4 in the Amazon: One of the hits of our trip was installing several infra-red trap-camera’s with biologists for the Wired Amazon project which will be capturing wildlife that passes during the day and the night-time so it can be studied and protected better. We will be sent the footage from our camera’s next month and we hope to maybe have recorded some jaguars, puma, ant-eaters, tapirs, snakes,.. who knows! stay tuned! Going through the forest with a purpose and looking and searching for the best places to set up the camera’s was amazing, even for our smallest hiker!! The kids also participated with the scientists to help looking for tiger moths. These will be studied by experts and several times new species have been identified here. If one of theirs is new they will be able to give it a name. The guides and scientists were awesome and the patiently resolved every single question the kids had about the forest.

Day 3 in the Amazon, we were just speechless from so much beauty. It was an early but well worthed getting up at 4pm. Breakfast at the clay licks was amazing. I always remember my grandfather had a similar set-up at the back of our greenhouses at home in Belgium. It was always my favorite thing to go up there and watch feasants and wildlife from out their together with him. This place really made me think back of this a lot. Very beautiful to be able to share this incredible nature with my family. The parrots and macaws come here to eat clay every couple days in the morning to get minerals and salts in their system and to be able to digest toxic berries and seeds they eat. This behaviour seems only to happen in our part of the world, because the rains here have so few salt and minerals left, coastal rains have a lot more of that and this makes that the birds get enough salts and minerals from the fruits they eat over there which doesn’t happen that much in the Amazon. Also other animals come to the clay licks, we saw monkeys as well. We actually saw quite a lot of spider and howler monkeys in this area.

Between activities there was time to chill a bit, playing chess, at Refugio Amazonas there was also a little playground for the kids, massages and bar for the adults and we re encountered with an old friend that makes amazing artesian things from the shells of the local Brazil nuts. Then off further down the Amazon to our second lodge for the next 3 days.

Day 1 in the Amazon with small kids: we traveled by bus and motor canoe to Refugio Amazonas. Everyone loved the ride and the kids immediately connected with our Rainforest nature guide Timo, asking him a ton of questions. We had a nice lunch on the boat and saw turtles and capibara’s on the way to the lodge. Once there we were welcomed by the manager and we installed ourselves in our beautiful room for this one night before we continued our way deeper in the Amazon rainforest the next day to Tambopata Research Station.
