The Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras) are a stunning and ancient network of over 3,000 terraced salt evaporation ponds located in the Sacred Valley of Peru, near Cusco. These pools have been used for salt extraction since Inca times and are still operated by local families today. The saltwater naturally flows from a subterranean spring high in the Andes and fills each pond, where the water evaporates, leaving behind pure salt crystals.
