Have a good week everyone! We are off to the river tomorrow for 8 days down the Heart of the Marañón section.

Last 2 days have been rainy, everyone here is happy after a long 4 month drought with a heavy fire season, the river should start picking up in the next weeks, if not days, and rainbows will be in full swing.

MAGDALENA! What a surprise you gave us this season. Sometime between February and March, in the middle of the rainy season, Magdalena creek came with a huge flood, damming the river for more than a mile (the two class III rapids above Magdalena are underwater now) and creating a huge class V rapid.

Magdalena was always a class IV rapid that we scouted most of the times, with a beautiful beach on river right that we used to camp with low flows. The huge debris fan now pushed the whole river to the right, flooding the beach, and giving the rapid at least 10m more of gradient.

The first two private groups coming down in April were not able to stop and scout, since the debris fan was still wet and muddy, impossible to walk on. A sneak line on the left was possible but gave this groups an epic run, with flips involved. With the river going lower, more holes and rocks with nasty wrap potential started showing. With our first commercial groups in early May, we started lining the rafts on river left, struggling with the knee deep mud, but managing to make it through with several rafts after 3-4 hours and a lot of rope work.

Every trip we kept finding lower water and different options, when the left line was clear to run, we started running with only guides in the rafts, guests were walking. Left and staying left, then right to left, now there is no sneak line on the left, so running the meat in the right is the only option, but possible, still a big class IV+ rapid.

This video shows our first run with guests in late June, starting right, then far left to avoid some nasty holes and rocks, then back to the middle for the fun run out wave train.

It´s impressive how much the Marañón changes, and some big events like this can really create big changes, we are fortunate to be running a free flowing river that constantly challenge us, good reminder to always be alert, never understimate, and avoid the peak of the rainy season. If you would be running the river when this event happened you would be in serious danger.

Thanks to this crew for the strong paddling and willingness to give it a try, it sure was a fun rush!! and thanks to Roy Carrasco for bringing his drone and registering this epic day.

Wrapping up a quick trip to the Cañete river for a Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician - Pro course. Always a pleasure to come back to this beautiful valley full of good old friends, and to meet new river people from different countries while refreshing, practicing and learning rescue techniques and skills. Huge thanks to for the organization, and to instructors and for making it down here to share their knowledge. It's been many years since the last Rescue 3 course happened in Perú, and we are happy that two from our team, and , got to participate. Back to the north for some more expeditions now!

Cajamarca is the starting point to our 11 and 7 day trips, this city has pre inca, Incan, Colonial and Republican history, is one of the biggest Andean cities in Perú at 2,750 masl (9,000 ft.) and provides a perfect meeting place just 4 hours from the Balsas Put in (7 day trip) with all the needs of a modern city, like airport, hotels and fine dining. Ah! and the Incan hotsprings

28th of July is the Peruvian Independence day and the biggest holiday of the year, we didn´t got to be on the river this year, but here is a throwback to 2021 when we brought our Cata for the first time (and also a recovered Ocelot to leave in the wild) with some good friends.
