MAGDALENA! What a surprise you gave us this season. Sometime between February and March, in the middle of the rainy season, Magdalena creek came with a huge flood, damming the river for more than a mile (the two class III rapids above Magdalena are underwater now) and creating a huge class V rapid.
Magdalena was always a class IV rapid that we scouted most of the times, with a beautiful beach on river right that we used to camp with low flows. The huge debris fan now pushed the whole river to the right, flooding the beach, and giving the rapid at least 10m more of gradient.
The first two private groups coming down in April were not able to stop and scout, since the debris fan was still wet and muddy, impossible to walk on. A sneak line on the left was possible but gave this groups an epic run, with flips involved. With the river going lower, more holes and rocks with nasty wrap potential started showing. With our first commercial groups in early May, we started lining the rafts on river left, struggling with the knee deep mud, but managing to make it through with several rafts after 3-4 hours and a lot of rope work.
Every trip we kept finding lower water and different options, when the left line was clear to run, we started running with only guides in the rafts, guests were walking. Left and staying left, then right to left, now there is no sneak line on the left, so running the meat in the right is the only option, but possible, still a big class IV+ rapid.
This video shows our first run with guests in late June, starting right, then far left to avoid some nasty holes and rocks, then back to the middle for the fun run out wave train.
It´s impressive how much the Marañón changes, and some big events like this can really create big changes, we are fortunate to be running a free flowing river that constantly challenge us, good reminder to always be alert, never understimate, and avoid the peak of the rainy season. If you would be running the river when this e
Awesome video from @loveboat_paddleco during our 10 day Calemar to Puerto Malleta trip last September.
Samosierra rapid is the biggest in the Middle canyon, ever changing and solid class IV for almost 2km long it's always a big challenge that sets the vibe for the first days. You want to camp nearby and start figuring out the 5-6 sections puzzle early in the morning, depending on the year and flow, this could take several hours in the best cases.
Samosierra rapid is created at the confluence of the Río Miriles, last year this one flowed at crazy high levels at the peak of the rainy season (March) and (seems) naturally dammed the river for a while, the Marañón was probably not that high and got squezzed against the right wall and eventually carved a new set of rapids, the more we run this river the more respect and appreciation we have for it, just imagining being at that confluence when this event happened it's nuts, the size and magnitude are hard to explain.
In the video we see the entrance rapid with Ilon (12) and Aviv (10) paddling in the front, mom Sarah is taking pictures and setting safety. The bow was a bit light with the kiddos and the wave punch send Ilon flying...good thing we made our drills and learned how to HOLD ON!! These are the youngest kids we've take down the river... And oh yes we had an epic time.

River Wilde - Marañón
***Turn sound on!***
Words and film that many of us can relate too. Eloquently put, these are the things the bring us back to the river time and time again. The people we meet off the beaten track and the experiences shared are the reason we go into the wilderness; they make it all worthwhile. #Happinessonlyrealwhenshared
We journeyed down the Marañón River with Her Odyssey - La Odisea de Ella, the first two women to walk/travel the length of the americas by non-motorised means, sharing some of the craziest and most inspirational stories you can imagine.
We stopped in local villages to project screenings of the river conservation film #Confluir which lead to genuine conversations with locals about the future they dreamed of, and how they would like international visitors to be a part of that.
Dan and a handful of other adventurous souls joined us on this magical trip in July, 2018. With this film Dan was able to articulate share his why as a filmmaker.
The thing is, every trip is special and every person who comes down has their individual story and why. The river has this unique power to bring us together and draw it out of us. Sitting round the fire, paddling together through the rapids or floating calmly through the majestic canyon. #paddlingtogether #remandojuntos
