It's World Bread Day 🥖, and we'd like to take this opportunity to tell you about an absolute Polynesian delicacy: the coconut loaf 🍞 or "pain coco"

It's found all over the islands of Tahiti, and is usually eaten for breakfast or at snack time. Unlike the traditional bread recipe, the water is replaced by coconut water and milk. Some recipes even add grated coconut to the mix... Between us, this is one of our guilty pleasures at Tahiti Experiences 😅

Among the legends of Huahine, one still holds a special place in the hearts of Polynesians and locals alike: Bobby Holcomb 💚

Born in Hawaii, he moved to Huahine and became a key figure in Tahitian music 🎼 and Polynesian art 🎨. Polynesians quickly adopted him and began to sing his praises. Recognized by his fellow musicians, he defends the values of Polynesian culture and customs, as well as the protection of nature 🌱. Even today, his music and lyrics resonate in the Polynesian soul 🪽

Today, we're heading for Parea Bay in the south of the island of Huahine (Huahine Iti). Parea Bay lies opposite Araara Pass - a must-see spot for surfers 🏄- and the motu 🏝 of the same name.

It is also bordered by one of Huahine's most beautiful white sand beaches 🏖. Strolling along the beach, you won't want to miss the “Marae Anini”, a timeless symbol of Polynesian beliefs before the arrival of the first missionaries to the islands of Tahiti.

We conclude this month of August, dedicated to the Australes archipelago, with the island 🏝 of Rurutu. Once known as “Eteroa”, Rurutu takes on the appearance of Makatea Island, with its high limestone cliffs and numerous caves... a surprising geology that is a source of pride for its inhabitants.

Notwithstanding its neighboring islands, Rurutu also enjoys a mild climate, ideal for growing fruit 🍋🍈 and vegetables, particularly taro... a reputation that's well established 😎

With a circumference of 8.5 km², Rimatara is the smallest island 🏝 in the Australes archipelago. Despite its small land mass, it is renowned for its pandanus and distinctive handicrafts. Rimatara's “mama” 👵 are masters in the art of weaving “peue” (carpets), baskets and hats.

Rimatara is also home to two endemic species of rare birds 🐦: the Kuhl's Lorikeet - known as “Ura”, wich means "red" ❤️ - and the Rimatara reed warbler.

You can spell it out litchi, letchi or even lychee - no one will mind 😎 This bright red fruit, grown mainly on Tubuai in the Austral Islands, is originally from China.
It's delicious and easy to eat 😋 Its sweet, white fleshy pulp is a Polynesian delight during the year-end festivities.

Tubuai in the spotlight 📣! Considered the administrative center of the Austral Islands, Tubuai 🏝 is little-known compared to Bora Bora or Moorea - and yet has nothing to envy them 😜

Abundant nature 🥕, lush green mountains, sandy beaches ⛱ all around the island, diverse “Land & Sea” activities, a lagoon that can be up to 5 km wide in places, a strong and preserved cultural identity... the list goes on and on.

After a 7-year absence, the Austral Games 🏆 returned to the island 🏝 of Raivavae on August 5. Although not comparable to the Olympic Games 🏛, this sporting event nevertheless brings together identical values in the Australs archipelago: the promotion of physical and cultural activity 🫶

The islands 🏝 of Rurutu, Tubuai, Rimatara, Rapa and of course Raivavae took part in this 6th edition 🥇🥈🥉

The island of Rapa 🏝 isn't often mentioned 🥲

It's the southernmost of the Austral Islands and the most isolated of them all. The mixed cargo ship "Tuhaa Pae" 🛳 is the only boat serving the island from Tahiti, with a rotation every two months or so 😲

Despite these constraints, the island of Rapa is full of surprises... 😌 did you know that the locals grow apples 🍎, pears 🍐, peaches 🍑 and nectarines? Yes, they do - all thanks to a very cool climate 🌞

Our postcard of the month: the Australes islands 🏝, best known as a natural sanctuary for humpback whales 🐋. They reach the archipelago between August and October, to mate and give birth - an incredible sight for us, a miracle of life for them 🐳
